Had a problem with the wiper motor on a 300e 1987 - became slow this year, and very weak, substituted it with another, this seemed to have the same problem.
As it is summer, I havn't used the wipers much till the thunderstorm today - now driving down the motorway, you get a burning smell after half hour with the wipers on.
Any suggestions ?

Hi Russell

I suspect that you may of used a second hand component. Sometimes you can buy the same problems as most of the other motors of the vehicles have covered similar millages. Check out some of the parts people who have been mentioned in this forum.

But before you do that! Turn wiper on your car on. Switch the ignition off when the wiper is fully extended in the middle of the screen. The plastic cover at the bottom of the spindle. If you pull it. It will come of & clips back on in reverse. Ie hook it on and push. Put a small dab of grease on the spindle & smooth it across the whole of the spindle.(Don't use WD40) Then turn the wipers back on. With a bit of water on the screen to stop the wiper causing load on the wiper motor. If this cures it. Then ok. There is a brass furrel which the spindle slides in. This dries out, causing the wiper to struggle across the screen.

Good Luck.

wipers !

Thanks 4 that - The unit was second hand, and burnt out.
I managed to obtain some torx drivers, and stripped down the original motor. the problem was the commutator ? (bit the brushes connect to) were dirty, rubbed them with sandpaper till it came back to a nice copper colour.
reassembled the motor and it all works ok.

Hi Russell,

This is exactly the reason I don't like or recommend using second hand parts. You have to do the job twice. I know most of the time you get away with it. But the wiper motors on 124 don't just fall off. I am sure you have better things to do then replacing wiper motors all day. Glad to see you resolved the problem though.
