I changed my BMW 4 series from runflats within a few months of buying the car the tyres were 3 years old at the time and the noise and vibration the tyres were making especially over stone chipped surfaces or concrete section roads was horrendous - changed to MIchelin PS4 non runflats and the difference was night and day. As already said the sidewalls of runflats are stiffened so don’t allow much compliance with a rough road plus my tyres (Bridgestone) had hardened so perhaps the same might have happened to yours.
New tyres are certainly a good place to start, failing that I’d be looking at sound proofing kits I fitted one to a Ford Focus Mk2 which suffered from a terrible drumming noise from the rear and it made a marked improvement.
You should get a good idea of how the vehicle is made from the test drive you’ve booked it may be that some sections of the V have been cheapened off with thinner gauge metal in which case I”d hand it back

There are no real perfect roads near me but yes if I find a bit of new tarmac it goes away as far as I can tell, not found a fast road new bit to fully test, on motorway M1 it's terrible.

I currently have run flat pzero on fronts and non run flat pzero rosso audi fitment on rear, previous owner not on my that one.

Changing them all to non run flats on Saturday now as appointment got moved

will update over weekend, I've also gone for PS4 all round as well, 19"

I had ps4s on the Golf, but went with something slightly softer this time so PS4 rather than PS4s

Hi Malcolm,
Thank you for the info here on the RFT's. Its reassuring to know that others have similar noise issues with RFT's and that changing them made a significant difference. Gives me confidence that I can improve the road noise.

Regarding the V-Class structure, I dont think the vehicle is cheaply made. Its a heavy car, with 8 leather seats, twin pano roof etc... its not surprising, and its quiet on good surfaces so I dont believe thats the issue. Road noise aside, we are very happy with it. The space is amazing for the kids.

Please do Leespo. Your results from your changing to non-RFT's will probably comfirm if the RFT-tyres are the 'likely' cause of the excessive road noise.

Well sort of done but some issues that cloud things a bit.

Rather than repeating it on here, haven't driven anywhere until garage sorts issue Monday, just small drive home slowly

Hi Folks,
No more real updates from my side here. We continue to get used to the V-Class which is great on longer journeys and the kids love it. But the road noise on poor surfaces remains as 'poor' as it ever was.
I'm now really understanding that the V-Clas, whilst a great 'car', is still a Van underneath and my expectations were probably too high (and unrealistic) in thinking it would be as refined as an E-Class.

When the time comes, I'll probably switch to Non-RFT and we'll stick out the RFT for the meantime.

I think the noise is slightly better but could be my mind playing games, it's still there though and seems worse on certain roads which is stopping me thinking its windows or seals etc, but it's going into merc soon for a few bits so will ask them to investigate.

Our V220 is quite noisy on bad roads (concrete motorways) and a little “crashy” over potholes, otherwise is a nice drive.

We have the 19” so expect a little less comfort, have 245/45 Conti’s fitted, not run flats. Currently running them all at 33psi but still experimenting with that.
The recommended 36 has worn, scrubbed the front tyres on the outer edges.

Ours came with the Conti’s from new (2019)

Hi there, I bought a Cordless Air Compressor over the weekend so that I can expereiment a little with the tyre pressures, see if that helps in any way.
Let me know if you found that 33psi worked well....

I think the run flats are a red herring to be honest. I know they have a bad reputation but they have improved enormously since the early days when BMW started using them. As an example, run flats on my car (Goodyear F1) are rated at 67db and the non runflat version is rated at 71db, Pirelli P Zeros are 68db & 73db, run flat & non run flat. I've had 3 sets of runflats and none of them seemed noisy, Bridgestone, Conti & Goodyears.

I would agree, general road noise I feel ia a bit better and ride Quality, but don't think it's fixed my issue so not in this case.

see what merc say about the noise, suspect they won't hear it or can't replicate it, normal answer with main dealers from my experience but hopefully I'm wrong

Yeah, I'm beginning to think the same here rf065. You have the same RFT as me (Goodyear F1) so if you dont have any issues with their roadnoise, its probbaly that our expectations of the V-Class were too high (refinement wise).

Hi Leespo. Did you manage to speak to Mercedes UK about the problem?
I think in the end, the majority of my road noise is simply down to the V-Class (van based) structure.

I haven't gone that far, it's booked in at dealer next week for that and door handle light out so see what they say

Thanks Leespo.
BTW, I am this weekend going to investigate where in the V-Class I can gain easy access to panels (front & back wheel arches, footwells, sparewheel well, etc... and if I can gain easy enough access to these area's, I'll buy a pack of the Damping mats and apply them.
The Damping mats are only £45 for a pack of 20 sheets, so nothing to lose (if I can apply them easily enough).
From reading about these, even applied on small areas, they can make a significant difference.

hopefully that helps, think I will just turn on the AMG performance exhaust instead.

I tried looking for the AMG performance exhaust button in the V-Class last night and it seems to be missing.... :)

Hi Folks. For those of you who are interested, I was checking the Tyre pressures on the car.
The front and backs only measured around 32 / 33 psi.
According to the sticker inside the door, it should measure 41psi (Front) and 39 psi (back).
So I have increased the tyre pressure up to the recommended and I'll see how that goes.

BTW, I'm now (embarassingly) think my tyres are not RFT's. They are Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetrical 3 which I believed to be RFT's but it seems that Goodyear may do a non-RFT version (I dont see RFT or ROF stamped on the tyres).
