looking for views on decent auto diesel 4x4,s used mid range price wise ,not to many electronics . looked 4matic, seems complicated ford,no room under bonnet, vw similar duster auto diesel to tinny. kia sportage ,not latest model seems about right ,any opinions .under 18kpounds, under 60k miles, and some chance of not being stranded by electronic failures would buy older G wagon but had two and they are not good on gas .

Hi Andy,
The obvious answer is Land Cruiser though they are very expensive and other brands are newer/cheaper. That said the Land Cruiser will go for over 300k miles without breaking a sweat.
Kia Sorrento is a good reliable 4x4 for lighter duties (I'm assuming this won't be a mud plugger/off roader/overlander). You could also look at the Toyota Prado (though again expensive).

got that,ta, i had a toyota d4d before and jolly good it was but i found mpg pretty bad and parts are benz prices. leaning toward 2 yr old kia sportage auto diesel 4x4 wid nav. no off road ,unless ice, but expect to tow decent sized caravan to portugal and back for the winter three months. will review again G wagon but a 03 diesel auto still sells for loads and as said not great on diesel

Would a Sportage be man enough for the job? I would have thought the Sorrento a better bet.
You could always go for a Defender if comfort isn't too high on the list. They're pretty basic machines (even in final guises) so not a lot to go wrong.

LK, this really made me laugh :) You have heard the old saying haven't you?

90% of all Defenders ever made are still on the road ... only 10% have ever made it to their destination!

There may not be much to go wrong but what is there will go wrong :(

Only Joshing LK, I'm a big Land Rover fan :)

unless youre looking at OLD 4x4s, its unlikely there will be much room under the bonnet of ANY of them, to work on them at least (blame the designers)

that said, I do have a soft spot for the Ford Ranger (and the land rover defender) however it really depends what you intend to do with the vehicle and how big a vehicle you need

land cruisers are nice BUT IMO theyre a bit complicated compared to most others (like range rover territory almost, complicated

just looked at that, think thats still the horizontaly opposed engine, if so rebuilt one some time ago, did not much like the design ,tho i would agree they dont appear to give much trouble, its just when, if they do.thanks for link

ok just to address the elephant in the room, as I see it. its something maybe just I don't understand. you want a 4x4, but youre worried about fuel economy???

you will be driving a higher (therefore less aerodynamic = more drag = higher fuel useage) vehicle, you will also be dragging around extra weight (transfer box, extra diff/driveshafts/propshaft etc) that you wouldn't be on a regular car, and with plenty of room to work on it (presumably DIY stuff)

whilst some will be better than others, I feel that the quest to find something that ticks ALL the boxes (plus being pretty well made and refined) will be pretty much IMPOSSIBLE.

Ford Edge hasn't been around long enough to fit into budget, Kuga you say has insufficient room under the bonnet (not really sure how as its about as good as it gets nowadays space wise with the same engine in the Mondeo and I wouldn't say the Kuga had a noticeably shorter bonnet) and chances are the Ranger may be a little agricultural, or a bit thirsty, or both. and I use them as examples as theyre probably the (relatively) current models I'm most familiar with.

id like a 5.0 V8 petrol Mustang, supercharged to give me 800+bhp and give me 80mpg, but somehow, I don't fancy my chances!!! basically, I think somewhere along the line you will have to decide EXACTLY what you want the car to do, then buy the car that suits the purpose best, rather than think too much about how easy it is to work on or if you can get a million MPG because EVERY car is a trade off, unless you physically design and build it yourself to your own specs, and even then isn't guaranteed to tick EVERY box, if you have to buy components in.

The Boxer Diesel is bomb proof and second hand value on them is incredible

thats WHY i am leaning toward diesel auto sportage ,AS A REASONABLE compromise. good, for 2 yr ago fuel consumption, reasonable loading, reasonable interior, and reasonable price. as said would like another G but a decent one would be quite old, maybe 2003 and cost 2x more than 2 yr old sportage with much worse fuel consumption.

I like Subarus, in particular Legacy, as they are quite classless.
