just google best uk tow cars... although what car and caravan club have a completely different list to the one below.
No 1 has to be a suzuki jimny !!! ;)
Landrovers may not be to everyones taste, but a discovery has one of the smoothest rides off road, and parts are just so plentiful and cheap.. The jap machines are very expensive for parts, but like to think they need less of them !
I towed a 7.5m caravan back from france with my c220. 25mpg.
My friend usually tows with a vw sharan tdi. 30 mpg !!
Hate to think what fuel return a 4x4 towing a twin axle would guzzle...

Ford Mondeo will tow more than a Dacia Duster!!! GLE has tyre wear issues even without towing I believe, discovery is thirsty and I think the rest have been dealt with earlier by the OP IMO

It's the GLC with the reported tyres issues Pete.

The Disco 4 skips a bit on cornering with my big Sterling Continental on the back (had a hired D4 for one long towing holiday). The GLE tows it very well.

My two pennorth: My BIL has a diesel/auto Sorrento - It's about a year old now. He tows a four-berth caravan I don't know the Sorrento model but the spec is quite incredible. It drives in almost silence and I must say that I'm quite impressed.

seems like sorento gdi2,2.4 engines up to 2014 are prone to total engine failure ,and are subject to various class actions with kia, shame quite liked the look of that dont know if ALL engines that go in sorento are effected, however lots of complaints about kia acceptance of liability in like events especially after 1st owner.think i will give that one up.
The GDi is petrol (Gasoline Direct injection) and shared with Hyundai (who also had the same problem). It appears the blocks were not cleaned correctly after manufacture and the swarf in them blocked galleries causing total failure. It appears Hyundai reacted better than Kia did in this and were quicker to acknowledge a problem. Since then they have rectified the issue (improved prep before assembly). That engine is a joint Hyundai/Chrysler/Mitsubuishi design.
The diesel is a Hyundai designed engine shared with the Santa Fe (Hyundai and Kia are part of the same group).

Used to have a C63...
will look more at volvo ,looks ok, again fuel not great, could be better than published tho.......

If it helps, my OH has a 13-reg D5 XC60, 4.5 passengers and cases for a week - Plymouth to Dartford via Bristol (on a Friday evening), then down to Disney Paris the next morning and averaged 36+mpg indicated. (Weren't hanging around on the other side either).

Fairly decent at the cruise bit, comfy seats, fairly quiet... Hate Volvo's sludge o'matic gearbox though.

And the various safety systems drive me to distraction. o_O

that has been a niggle with Volvos for as long as I can remember (right back to the 240 series and the 'seatbelt not fastened' warning constantly clicking at you, even in the days before seatbelts were compulsory)

will check that out, D5. if i keep a car with the seat belt alarm ,i just open up the dash or glove box and amputate the bit that makes the noise... simples.. note ,on my SL benz very wisely organise the seat belt thing to go off after a while,at least thats how it works on mine. i guess when they think you are no longer interested in listening.
