We often have customers bring our courtesy car back, either having had it washed, or even washing it themselves.

We really do appreciate when customers do this, as we always go above and beyond wherever possible and its nice to see this being reciprocated. Unfortunately not all customers see us this way, and there are a lot out there to take advantage and push for unreasonable requests.

The question is, are they washing it as a kind gesture, or are they embarrassed driving a car that is being dusted every week by the dust bowl we are in (due to recent weather!)

E: Will make sure its washed if @Craiglxviii comes along :p

Based on the condition of my car, yes. Or some brown dust of some sort.

"but I only went to the village and back, so I didn't fill it up" X 100 = emtpy tank

I repaired the key and replaced the batteries in it on the Mini I had from my Porsche specialist

I always have the fuel gauge reading slightly more than when I pick up a courtesy from my Indy, but more like under estimating its fuel range

An old B-Class.
I’m one of those that has always treated any car as if it were my own and looked after it (loner, hire, company etc)

I had a loner from MB ( latest CLA which I really liked) a couple of weeks ago (JCT600) and the tank was bone dry. I queried it and they said customers abuse the privelege and they have stopped fuelling the car. I live 20 miles from them so had to find a filling station (which I was worried about reaching) before I could head home. I’d rather they charged me a nominal fee to cover fuel costs and gave it to me with “some” fuel in the tank.

There are always those that ruin it for others.

If i have the car long enough for it to get notably 'dirty' and the garage are good to me, then yes, i usually return it clean. Same with fuel, photo fuel level on collection, match it on return give or take.

If the garage are a55h0les then it gets returned 'as is'. Had a 208 from a crooked body shop i was 'coerced' into using through my insurance a few years ago. They caused more damage to my C Class than it went in with (a dent), and clocked 500 miles off it before i picked it up (as they were driving it around it transpired), as i dropped in out of the blue with my spare key to check the car over prior to the supposed hand-back. That poor 208, went back spotless, but looked like it had just completed a round of the WRC before a tenner was handed to my local scratch-n-spray.

Like for like from me.
If I pick it up dirty and empty that's how I return it, slightly dirtier and slightly emptier.

I do remember putting several litres of petrol in Alex's S600 when he gave me that as a courtesy car. And I only did 23 miles in it...
