Probably to feed air into the air box, I read they are not very aerodynamic

Yes they are allowed to have up to a 20mm fairing on the Halo to stop it affecting the airflow into the engine intake above the drivers head.

I watched a segment recently from Mercedes James Allison and he said the impact was minimal and reduced to negligible with a fairing. But not yet seen every car so will be interesting to see who uses one and who doesn’t.
