My dash cam is for use in the event of an accident or to prove an incident etc is not my fault. I'll also use it to help a victim of crime or to help their claim against someone that caused an accident.
Maybe even put a funny one up for all to see.

I've made genuine mistakes when driving myself, we all have if we're honest.
Using them to dob people in for their errors is not cool in my opinion.

L John.
I got mine for the same reasons as you and not to "dob in" people as you suggest.

The examples were genuine quarter inch from hitting me near misses that needed dealing with and the dash cam did that very well.

L John, is it "cool" and acceptable for a professional articulated vehicle driver to cross red lights a good five seconds after they changed while on the blower? Is it, in your opinion L John, "cool" and acceptable to have your mobile clamped to your ear when driving? certainly not in mine.

Should driving instructors allow students to hack along major roads at +70mph and cut up others when they want to leave the major road without due care and attention to other road users? The driving instructor is an "instructor" and has dual controls and supposedly an advanced drivers test pass and should have known better which is exactly what his manager said.

Yes, we all make mistakes, I have made some real howlers in my 35 years and I have been lucky not to have become a KSI stat, esp on the m/c and agricultural vehicles, but I can honestly say I have done nothing like the examples I gave.

I carefully weighed up the potential consequences for me + my passengers and our combined extended families of the actions of these situations and in my "opinion", the opinion of the constabulary and MD of the school, thought it was something that needed dealing with.

If what I wrote came across badly then I appologise to those who take offense. I will add more detail and make it super clear next time! (and probably 5x longer).

Live long and prosper.

No it's not cool for them to drive with mobile phones etc. but I wouldn't get hot under the collar or report them over it unless they cause actual harm/damage.
Police are out there to.... er, police our roads.

There are countries that have secret police that inform on their people.
That's not something I would like here but as more cameras are all over the place, we could end up as unpaid police in practically every car.

Not saying what you did was wrong, just not my choice.
Sure, it can be justified by getting dangerous drivers off the road before they kill someone but a big brother world wouldn't be a word I'd like to live in.

I bought mine just for safety, living in an old seaside town, people drive like idiots when they leave every night. Mine is the little Sony with latitude and longitude.

I guess it's the same everywhere really... Everyone more important, or in more of a rush than the next person. Some decidedly shaky judgement calls with regards to width, oncoming speed... And I guess a lot more cars on the road!

That's why I've taken to the skies!!! :)

We are still better off than in the smoke, I do not think I could live in Watford again.

Maybe it's my upbringing, but nobody likes a grass. East Germany had a fairly effective public support of Stazi too.
I'm with you 100%, evidence of an accident is fine, reporting people for their activities is the job of the police.

Pretty certain. It won't even play on my Mac.

Even has a hissy fit sometimes on older Windows platforms (XP & Vista) if I want to delete, save of edit a clip on occasions.

At some point I'll be g thing a newer laptop, so not too bothered.

One thought for me, what if you were for example having a spirited drive, stopped safely at a set of lights and someone rear ended you? You wouldn't want the prior evidence of speeding to appear I assume?
Also, could your own dash camera be used in evidence against you if you were stopped by the police or caused the accident?

After being rear ended by an uninsured driver last year, I'd be keen to invest. My insurance company were worse than useless despite witnesses and photos

Have come to the conclusion most insurance companies are useless Neil. They rest safe in the knowledge that we'll end up footing the bill one way or another, so what's the incentive for them to do their job?

As for getting nabbed via your own footage, I believe several people have already been prosecuted courtesy of their YouTube videos!
