Not barging in on this thread ( or maybe I am.. ??? ) But I have read here, and in other forums, that if you were to run a competition as to which MB engine is the best, the absolute very best, that the OM642 would win it hands down? Any comments on this?
Depends upon your idea of “best” I don’t believe the OM642 would be even close on realibility...

Even in the sooty world I'd guess the OM606 would be higher up the list than the OM642.
Agreed, slow compared to modern CDI’s but reliabubble. No “Black Death” injector issues.

Combination of things I suppose Blobcat....Performance, Reliability, Long life, Maintenance costs, Economy.. best all rounder, I think.? Given the choice, which MB engine would you pick? Can be either Petrol, or the Demon Diesel... And what makes your choice the best, in your opinion?

Interesting question, I loved the OM613 IL6 in my W210 E320, great engine, no issues in 130k miles. The OM642 I had, had the CPS problem but not much else, although looking now that engine has many “features”. The OM654 in my W213 was amazing, loads of power, quiet as a mouse and used no fuel. Too early to tell what long term reliability will be like though.

I’m knocking around in a late M272 and that is a very nice engine although petrol wise I’d go M155 or M100. With money no object a nice M120 would be something special.

I'm now on my third M112 powered car and across the three of them have had one CPS failure in 200k miles. That's all.
Add in the M113 we have now and a crank pulley is all that's added to the mix.
Neither are overly economical but they are exceptionally smooth and refined although in 240 form a little lacking in torque (not an issue with the V8).
The M119 is worse on fuel, has more power and makes a noise that gets your senses tingling.
The distributor equipped cars suffer regular ignition issues and 93-95 cars have self destructing wiring harnesses - neither are difficult but the loom isn't cheap (but is quick to replace). Both those issues go away on post 94 cars.
Some 119s had issues with camshaft oilers and some had issues with plastic timing chain guides but in general they are a superb design and very tunable forming the basis of the Sauber Le Mans cars.

what's you opinions on the m104 or om648? both have given me no trouble thus far. i find the m104 very smooth, quiet but has a nice note when pushed on. the om648 is certainly tractor-esque

M104 is a great engine but has an appetite for head gaskets at around 100k miles.

Down the road a bit, I think that the OM654 engine will be the one I look out for...but the 613 or the 642, would definitely not be bad alternatives either.

The OM654 is amazing “under warranty” time will tell on how it fares especially with adblue and all the latest electronics and plastic. I hope it lasts as I might have another one depending upon needs/wants/requirements.

So the OM651 did not even make the List of "Best MB Engine"....still I have not seen too many adverse comments here on the forum about them. So while they don't make the top 3, that just mean's that they are not necessarily a bad engine per se, just that there are better MB engine's out there. The mileage on my w212 is now 133'000 Miles, and I am expecting to get 200'000 miles from it, am I being overly optimistic about it? Only time will tell, I guess.

By the time I will be changing, either the OM654 will have proved itself to be a success, or a " Warranty only" engine as you suggest.

Search 651 on here, not good. Yes some do an amazing amount of miles, I expect careful owners, yet some can self destruct.

Back on topic... Under a bag of sand is cheap! I'm usually circa £1150, but I do fit a new cooler for that.

We fitted a new cooler and a new port motor as it was very contaminated with oil (common cause of failure), showed no faults on star but gave the customer the choice as we were there and its no extra labour cost. Still came in under £1k
