does anyone else get really really cheesed off with the misuse of rear fog lamps,(i'm not bothered about fronts), where i live it only takes bonfire smoke to blow across the road and on they come, a dazzling parade of red, personally when driving in fog i switch my foglamps off when i spot a vehicle in my mirrors as soon as i think they've spotted me, it only takes one person not to spot a brake light to create a spectacular pile up

It makes me very cross indeed.

As you say, it only has to forcast it on the weather and they're on. And they're on for 3 days aswell.

I was coming up the M42 only a week or so ago and there was a little bit of fog about but nothing that restricted visibility further than the headlamps anyway and the car infront, straight away, as if it was the phone ringing an them answering it. On go the fog lights. the fog cleared to NOTHING within 300 yards. I followed that car from the M40/M42 Junction at just over 70mph up to where i get off for home at Junction 30 of the M1. Not a patch of fog after that 300 yards and they still had them on when i got off the motorway.

That's getting on 90 miles.

Now, i know all cars are different but i have a ****** annoying yellow light on my dash board that tells me my fog lamp is on. Now i can't go past a garage or any house that might have a outside tap if my windscreen washer lamp is on which is the same colour it is so bright and annoying so how these people can forget i will never know.

Front ones annoy me aswell, they're often very bright in your mirrors and coming towards yo, particularly aftermarket ones that have just been put there and pointed somewhere random. But not as much as rear ones.

Sometimes, if the mood takes me, I like to drive behind the offending driver, with my full beams on. working on the principal that if the light rain or heavy cloud cover, is sufficient to warrant use of the rear fog light then they need all the help they can get in spotting other road users i.e. me.

Yes, joined a 10 mile convoy of cars, i was behind a 4x4 for the 10 miles which had rear fogs on (worse cos they're higher) flashed main beam many times, but this was ignored. Ignorant git!!!

Rear fog lights on during daytime does not worry me at all , even if it is only mildly misty. What gets my goat is when the stupid gits have them on when it is dark, this is illegal they are only supposed to be used in thick daytime fog.
Also when it is really foggy the number of numpties driving with no lights or sidelights only. This morning along the Hogsback it was as thick as Elephant Spnuk, I am sure one third of the cars were not showing appropriate illumination.

People are too ignorant to realise that headlamps are used for 2 reasons. For you to see ahead of you and FOR OTHERS TO SEE YOU. They forget this second point so whenever its raining, if headlamps don't increase their vision then they don't put them on.

I have also been known to drive behind people with their fog lights on, with full beam on, and my front fog lamps, On my sprinter they're all within the same cluster on the front, it's tempting to power a few stage lights from a big inverter and fasten them to the roof. Just to get my point across. Also for people coming the other way with main beam on, or as has been mentioned, one headlamp plane spotting.

Ah Ellsy, that's really sweet.

I do the same thing. Sometimes the idiots realise, but some don't.

Question: Rear Fog light/s

Does ANYONE know of anyone who has been prosecuted for having their rear fog/s on when road conditions do not require them to be on.??

yes, i know someone who got a £30 fine i think for doing so. In this particular case, they had been for an MOT a few days before, and the tester had left it in the on position after testing them. It was the first time she'd been out at night after the MOT.

Ironically the interior fog lamp warning light didn't work, which is a requirement for the MOT, but it didn't fail!

I got stopped just before Christmas for having my front fogs on. I'd recently been through a foggy valley but to be fair, I'd been in the clear for a while but was heading back in to hadn't bothered to knock them off (plus I admit I like the look with them on and they don't dazzle). Reading between the lines, they were actually using it as an excuse to brethalyse drivers rather than anything to do with actual offences but they did say that there was a £30 fixed penalty.....its just that they don't intend to apply it (unless of course, you refuse the breath test).
Anyway, a quick blow (as it were) and I was on my way. But I agree, they should be standing at the side of the road pulling people with fogs on unnecessarily. They could also do the same in foggy conditions, stopping all the muppets (and there are so many) who think it's acceptable to drive in thick fog with side lights or no lights on.

Personally I'd impound their cars as they are clearly too stupid to have one.

BUT - they wouldn't be able to see each other, would they?

in my opinion anyone who gets behind the wheel of a vehicle in either foggy or raining conditions and actually drives without at least dipped headlamps, should not have been issued a licence in the first place, another problem is ignition illumiated dashboards, how many times have you spotted somebody in maybe a citroen or peugeot,(both manufacturers i think still have this feature), driving at night through a well lit area with no lights on but because the dash is lit up they think the headlamps are on....

p.s can somebody explain to me why on earth do you see the occasional car travelling with all of the windows steamed up, is it a case of warm the feet up first, drive off then think about demisting ?????

Ever thought that they might have been doing something else before they set off?

Don't know what though. ;)

I think she means steam cleaning the upholstery. Must be. Can't think of anything else.

Back on the fog light issue. While traveling back from Scarborough yesterday, I came upon 3 drivers who felt it necessary to use fogs lights. The weather was merely cloudy. I even took off my sun glasses to make sure.

Whilst on the M20 on the way down here, I came across one car (travelling slowly) who not only had the rear fog lights on, but was driving with their foot on the brakes (Auto?). The car was packed to the gunnels with an Asian family and was almost dragging it's exhaust pipe. Almost forgot -it was DAYLIGHT.
