No I'm not a car thief......Just wondered how long a SL500 would stay on my drive. Seriously is there a history of this desirable motor being easy to lift or has anybody got extra available security or advice?
Thanks for your time.

For a start, they are not good cars for leaving out all the year round.

You may find that your insurance company would insist on some form of tracking device. Especially if you are contemplating leaving it out on the drive. Quite a lot have them fitted almost as standard when new.

Nowadays people burgle your house for the keys so I'd say it were irrelevant.

Agreed. If it's the later shape "DAS3" type key then as far as I'm aware, these have never been bypassed & got a car going. The question you need to ask is "how hidden are you keys?"

The car won't be a shrine and will have to lump being used everyday in all conditions. I know running costs etc will reflect this........but it is just a car or am I missing something?

If that's the way you feel then you'll be insured so why worry if it gets stolen?

I personally don't know of anyone having had one stolen by it being broken into. One chap on here had his SL60 nicked but the keys were taken from inside his house.

Have you not seen "Gone in 60 seconds"? :D

I remember watching something a few years ago where they went into a packed office car park with a security expert. Usual thing, everyone interviewed and saying how they felt their car was secure. The expert then had 3 mins per car to move it across the car park.
At the end, there was a lonely 190E sitting there!
Merc have tightened up security since then!

Without the keys, all mercs are hard to nick without the aid of a low loader.

Trust me on this one, you dont need a low loader to nick this car. Only BMW have a foolproof system and that will be cracked eventually. All the security systems are computer based and that is their failing.

Not correct eric, the MB system has never been coppied for the passenger car range where as there are 5 BMW that you can buy a key coder for.

Re cracking computer codes the most sought and tried code to break in the world is the one used by SKY, someone got close 3 years ago, and SKy issued new cards.
