I'm glad it was help full :) you shouldn't be smelling diesel fumes in the cabin. I would check to make sure the clamp between the turbo and the cat is tightened correctly and that the clips are located correctly. If its leaking from there you would smell it in the cabin

Mine did not have any clamps, but instead it had a clip like the bottom clip on the top as well.

Can you pm me your VIN number, I will check to see if it should have a bolt clamp or a clip on it.

I always thought you needed to do both cats at once? Won't the second cat just clog up real quick now? My guess is since the first cat runs a lot hotter, it can trap and burn off a lot of the whatever it is they do. But now the second cat is going to get loaded with all the whatevers, and it will be running relatively cold so no chance of burning it off.

I think you may be getting confused between cats and DPF's.

On a diesel the cats primary purpose is to convert CO (carbon monoxide) to CO2 (carbon dioxide) and HC (hydrocarbons) to H2O (water) and CO2.

The only reason the cats would block up is excessive smoking that has been ignored for a long time, or if the internal structure of the cat broke down.

On a DPF, they are designed to capture diesel particulates (Soot). Stupidly they store it, and then burn it off (therefore releasing it back into the atmosphere anyway) at set intervals.

If the second cat blocks, ill remove that one too :)

Is your merc remaped aswell? I have an e320 cdi I've already removed the two cats on the mid section just looking to take the big one out that you have done and then remap it.

Indeed it is, 22psi of boost pressure (any more and it blows the hoses off!)

Hi. This thread looks very interesting. I'm going to look into removing the cat.. does anyone have any write-ups on removing the secondary cats.. My indie suspects blocked cats is causing my limp home problem.. I have never had problems with the car smoking. I don't really believe him and suspect the turbo acctuator or Throttle position sensor but removing the cats is a cheap way to isolate the problem.. I have fitted the EGR shunt so have ruled out the EGR valve, changed the MAF and fuel filter.. Where did you get the ECU remapped?
Many thanks
Mick

An easier way would be to look at the turbo clamps on the front and back of the front cat. If it's blocked then you will see soot marks at the joint where it's blowing. If yes then remove away :)

Wonder how long your turbo is going to last. Your EGT would be way up there and its speed would be rather high too at full boost and revs.
Fun while it lasts tho' :)

What sort of power is it running? Av taken all the cat's out now. Fitted a panel filter aswell sounds pretty good and much more responsive. Still needs a remap though to take it to around 240-250bhp think that would be just fine for the engine before I brake it lol

Realistically, probably around 230 ish. You have nothing to worry about engine wise, there are people who have had 500 bhp out of this engine! My Center cats are still in at the moment.

Mine sounds loud already! A nice burble when im trundling along. Also remeber that the TQ is rated for 580nm and with a remap you probably get close to that limit, the gearbox will be the first thing to go
