Did the industry predict the price increase? If not then their predictions of the drop again is speculation?

Sure, that is what forecasts are, I would just like to hear the rationale for their predictions.

Well, I've taken the plunge. My local dealer has offered me a great price so I'm selling it.
I'll get a banger to potter around in until the world sorts itself out.
I've had a glorious 18 months driving it and I'm not sure I'll ever be able to afford anything else like it unless prices do go back to normal, but even if they never recover I'll have had my flirtation with luxury :)

I think you are doing the right thing. :)
Used prices are just crazy at the moment but what goes up must come down as the say...which is not true for most things in life but absolutely has to be the case for current used car prices.
My dealer has guaranteed my trade in price for my new car which will arrive at the end of the month, and it is a full £2k more than I paid them for it in June 2020.
Under normal depreciation circumstances I would be looking at a figure of £10k less for my trade in. o_O
I cannot pass up this opportunity.

Dreaming of a CL55k - one day maybe....
Prices started to drop last week - market predicted to soften next month and return to normal by middle of next.year.- you may have got out at the absolute peak, well done!

Chip shortage will ease and when it does used market will be awash with the PX's that are not in the system now.

We are 60% down on stock levels at the moment, but come Jan / Feb should be plenty about.....

That's the theory, but it's all a guess of course

Well, I'm not selling after all.
After giving me a really good price on the shooting brake my local dealer have decided they are not in a position to do a direct buy because they have full stock.
I really don't mind!
I can still appreciate the cosseting and inherent safety that I originally bought the car for, and I'll also maybe get to use the self parking gizmo one day!

Eventually sold my 2018 Mini yesterday as it hardly gets used now. I got quotes (sorry “indications”) from all the usual suspects including We Buy Any Car, We Want Any Car, Evans Halshaw, Mororway.co.uk and my local Mini dealer who originally sold my late wife the car,

Prices were originally around £14,800 but I didn’t get round to doing anything and, when I next checked they were around £15,500, increasing to £16,500 a couple of weeks ago. Having had a bit of time to do something about it, I tried again and was quoted £15,500 by the Mini dealer after inspection. Others also came in around the same figure except for WWAC at £16,500 and Motorway at £16,700.

I went with WBAC as they come to you and their agent turned up late yesterday afternoon. It was all very pleasant and professional. Initial offer was £16,250 less their £78 “admin” fee, I pushed him up to £16,300 clear (so £16,378 before the fee) and the money was in my account within minutes of us completing the “paperwork” which was all electronic. They will collect the car from my driveway in the next 14 days,

The only downside was that it took several attempts over a couple of days to get through to book the appointment as there were long delays in answering their phones but their offers were consistently on the higher end of the range. My walk away position was £16,00 so I was pleased with the fInal outcome
Having sold to WWAC for £16,300, I’ve now found it listed on Autotrader with a London trader for £20,000. They do seem to have cleaned up a couple of minor surface blemishes and some slight alloy damage (which the WBAC guy didn’t seem to notice).

Edit… just checked and we paid £23,112 for it in August 2018!

I have just done a comparison price with my car with Motorway and Webuyanycar. Motorway have valued it at £2,000 more than Webuyanycar. Not that it is for sale at the moment

Prices seem to softening now, so I suspect the peak of the sellers market has passed.
As an example my SL400 that I started this thread discussing and which I sold to WWAC for £42,300 is now on sale at £39k, so with 2 new tyres, sorting some small paint blemishes and a buyer wanting some discount off the screen price they are probably running at about a £4k loss!

Yeah, it will be soon, we have a four door car and there is only the two of us. I am at the moment looking at a very low mileage 2018 SLC200, three things at the moment stop me, it has a black interior, it is a bit on the expensive a side at the moment at £26,000, and I will have to get it signed off by the management. There will of course be others I am sure :)

My wife would have to help me out, she is 12 years younger than me ;)
Didn't you use to have more initials on your username, Andy? - or have I missed something?

Well there's only two of us and we went up in size from an E Class estate to an R Class. Have I got it wrong somewhere?

Yes I did Steve, it used to be AJD. I asked for my user name change because I use A.J. on other forums and I just wanted some sort of uniformity :)

We are being selfish in our advancing years Alastair. We are in the process of of downsizing to an apartment in Norwich so we thought we would downsize the car to a 2 seater drop Top as well. We have had Convertibles before and just fancy another. Our family all have family sized cars so we have only got ourselves to consider :)

From what I gathered from speaking to Motorway is that they don't actually buy your car, they auction it on your behalf!?
The bloke I spoke to said that they could not 100% guarantee the price they offered me, it depended on the dealers on the day.
All they seem to do is give an indication of what it will fetch, albeit very accurate.
On the other hand I believe WBAC come up with real money then auction the car themselves later.
Of course, I could be very wrong.
