Seen mention recently that the back of the EGR can be removed to check/clean the mechanical inside workings of an egr . Even though I remove mine yearly to spray the gunk off I had never taken it apart before so blaming the sunshine I cracked on with the attempt .
Two bolts to remove the EGR , mine came out easily . I managed to pop the black plastic cover off the valve eventually with only breaking one of the 4 plastic tabs .
The working were fairly clean already but operating them with a finger allows the plunger to be moved a few mm’s to give it a good clean and spray through with carb cleaner .

Word of warning don’t overtighten the two bolts into the soft aluminium threads , I think one of mine is starting to strip but it seems to be holding well enough now .
Maybe there will eventually be another thread of how do I sort this out, but that’s for another day .

I need to learn all this stuff for the 251..

Still figuring out where most stuff hides (and on a 251 it does hide!)

Found the turbo (well hidden under the scuttle), pcv valve (impossible to see without removing scuttle), DPF differential pressure sensor (again well hidden under the scuttle), batwing (well hidden under the scuttle - are you picking up a theme yet?) and I think I've found the EGR.... (Not hidden under the scuttle!)

They all sounds like jobs for a warm garage or next summer :)

You're building up my to-do list Wighty because I'm a bit of a fiddler if there are no actual faults to repair!

Are you just cleaning the mechanism or the carbon built up inside too?

No I just cleaned the Valve itself , nothing inside the engine hole that it fits into .
I did clean this front egr pipe in the summer though

Hmmm wonder where it's located on the Viano? Hidden right out of sight behind the turbo or like on the 642 Sprinter at the front near the oil filler cap?

Pity you did not think to put some threadlock on the bolt and in the cavity before screwing it back in. If it fails could be an awkward enough job to fix. Re threading and fitting a slightly large bolt.

I did think of threadlock , but instead I used one of the bolts from the turbo heat shield and that seemed to “bite “ ok .
I could still use thread lock if I get an issue , or because the bolt exits the bottom of the housing I could just add a nut to the bottom of it instead .
I will have a think a come up with a cunning plan ;)

Ah, if it's a straight through set up then you'll be fine
