@Wighty was this an OCD job or was there an issue.
Have you done the PCV yet?
OCD job buddy , yes I did the new metal pcv pipe today on another thread . I also have an updated pcv unit that’s been fitted for a year or so

Inspired by wighty, I removed my EGR valve and gave it a clean today. It was formidably resistant to coming out: the trick of loosening the bolts and then revving the engine failed miserably so I had to resort to some serious pounding with a wood chisel.

Anyway, it probably didn't need doing as it turned out. There was a thin coating of soot but superficial only - nothing that could be prised off. I cleaned it anyway with Mr. Muscle Oven Cleaner and a really handy brush which I got from B&Q.

Nice and sparkly(ish) now... :)

Helicoil. Easy job in alli if there is access done right, stronger than origional. I helicoiled my lazer sight onto my berrata 9mm inox. Thread lock is not good in alli if you ever need to get bolt out again. .

If and when you get it lifted a few mm , I used a woodworking chisel to get mine started , get some penetrating spray in there , twist and lift . It's the rubber o ring that seems to latch on . From what I can remember

Good luck.

+1 for the chisel , watch the very soft metal though .
Might be worth getting the engine very hot first and spraying release lube in the gap before you start .
I also used a piece of wood and a hammer to knock the egr left and right slightly.

There was a video on YouTube a long time ago but I’m afraid I’m unable to find it where someone got some steel bar and basically made a C spanner type affair that had two steel dowels that fitted into the bolt holes on the egr valve and then they could rotate the valve gently back and forth and remove it.

Loosen the bolts and go for a drive, that got my stuck valve free.

Well managed to get the valve to turn about 1/4 inch but cannot get it out. I used penetrating spray and loosened the bolts took for a drive. When the valve turned there was a steady stream of coolant squirting out - I was not expecting this as it wasn't mentioned anywhere - is this normal? There is no coolant hose connected to the valve as far as I can see. Also can't get it to turn back to screw back in!
I've left it now as it's pi55ing down - will have to fix tmrw as need the car for 12pm...

You might need to use a light hammer on it , to get it out all the way . Dont let it boss you . It might shrink a bit when it cools down

I have been but it's awkward trying to get the access to hit it in the right place. is the coolant leaking out going to be a problem? Thanks for the quick reply.

I've no idea what that could be , probably exhaust gases ??? When I popped mine out on the c250 it was a o ring that was bonded to the housing ,stopping it from coming out . I tapped mine round one way then the other , pulling up on it as I went , eventually it gave in.

There was definitely exhaust gases coming out as well as what looked like water spraying out, which eventually stopped

Right - got the valve to move and then saw there is a hose to the bottom left which is not on properly hence the coolant leak. I've had to top up coolant a couple of times in the last month so this could be be the reason. I can't access the clips to remove the pipe so have refitted everything back. Not having a great day - this plug has broken off the housing due to the brittle plastic. What is it and can I still drive the car?
I overtightened the top bolt and the flaming housing has cracked - it still feels secure. I may just get the damn thing replaced now.

I have the AA coming out to have a look at the coolant leak - I also have parts and garage cover and have the fault codes for the stuck egr.

My cay can only get better...
