Could the coolant be coming out of the hole on the base of valve? What is the hole for?

I'd of thought that's to seal exhaust gases though not coolant ?? Does the base of the egr sit in a moving torrent of engine coolant?? Anyone !!!

The coolant flows through the EGR and through a different hole in the gasket

There are different versions of the egr for the different om642 versions then.
The om642 in my 06 Jeep just uses the large o ring only to seal it as per the valve in the eBay link below

Yeah that's where my confusion is . Mine didn't have any coolant pipes , or gasket , just the rubber o ring. Same as that in your link. The very o ring that makes it hard to get the egr out .

Yes - I thought that was the same as mine until I saw the coolant pipe buried under a bunch of cables when I lifted it out but it would not come out all the way

So here's a few pics of my EGR with the coolant hose bottom left:

Before I try and dismantle the part over the pipe - what is it and can it be removed/moved without too much bother?
I'll have a go myself if not too difficult as all MB indies I've spoken to are booked up for weeks!
Thanks

Managed to change it just now with new gasket, new exhaust pressure sensor. Took a few goes to start, test drove and after a few miles it went into limp mode with no warnings, just no revs above 1.5.
Scanned with Icarly and getting the same errors as before this time P14B800 and P14B700 = valve stuck closed and valve stuck open. The shut off valve on the gas pressure regulator has an electrical fault or open circuit. I'm going ton remove the connector and clean with contact cleaner to see it this makes any difference..

Whats icarly ??
Carly - (my bad not icarly) It's a scanning tool - I like it due to the wireless comms with the OBD port and it does everything my Icarsoft MBII does:

So this is the state of my EGR valve removed today:

It was much better than I expected - was expecting much more carbon - I'm thinking now that maybe it wasn't the EGR that was causing the problem but something else?

That’s the exhaust back pressure sensor , 24mm deep socket to remove it , watch the washer below it , don’t drop it .
I think it will put the car into limp mode if you drive it .
About £60-70 for it ?
I changed this today - the one i removed did not have a washer neither did the one I bought - would it cause any issues fitted without this washer?

The egr , turbo actuator, exhaust back pressure sensor and inlet port motor are all on the same fuse , so a fault with one can be hard to pin down .

Can I do the inlet port motor trick on my OM642?
