Different coloured lights?

...Err yes  obviously heh heh!

But I'm seriously wondering if it's just sponsoring a fashion fad or can a colour tint actually 1) improve intensity e.g.: for fog penetration etc or 2) heighten other road users awareness just as bright white from LEDs does (at least currently until they're a majority) ?

My wallet is already nagging me that it's just a fashion fad.

If the wattage of the bulb is the same, in theory (give or take a bit due to bulb variation within the same make), the output intensity is the same.
Sure, manufacturers have sussed that by using different materials for the filament, different gas, different filament position and different shape glass envelope, they can improve on an idea but a halogen bulb is pretty much a halogen bulb every time.
The lumen or lux output can be altered by colouring the glass but it will always be lower than white light.

Or in plain English, coloured bulbs = dimmer bulbs.

Oh and yes, it's something else that someone had a brainwave over to encourage people to spend money!

I wonder if these bulbs actually emit normal "white" halogen light but have tinted caps (but clear envelopes) which "colour" the headlamp assembly when looking at the car rather than colouring the light from the drivers seat?

Click the image link.

EDIT:
Yes it does say legal for road use, also in the centre of the circle it says "LEGAL CARD INSIDE"
Presumably to show to the MOT tester?

You're right of course when you say "dimmer bulbs"... the original idea of yellow gunge on the headlamps for "clearer vision" (joke) in fog was simply that by cutting down the light you got less reflection - or something like that. Funny though that the blue tint gives an impression of a brighter light...

And my wallet is still positively squirming and saying that we don't need them!

It will be interesting to see just how many members on here and the other side get bulbs sent out. If this was posted on all the other forums that ECP have latched on to have had as many replies and PM's, then that will be more bulbs than they have in stock !!

I think that the concept can cause problems in the future and people driving around with one pink and one blue when stocks get low.

I think that the stocking of these things might give problems as the dealers have to stock 4 times more, just for the colours.

A big one
Certainly the blue ones tend to give better light at night as they filter out the orangey tones of halogen lamps.

That's not "better" light, it's "less" light.

Filament bulbs are going to be biased towards the red/orange end of the spectrum. Removing a significant portion of that leaves you with the minority part of the output, which is also worse for glare in spray. Read this:

http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/blue/bad/bad.html

However, I'd imagine these just have a colour filter over part of the back of the bulb that shows in the reflector, to give a colour effect without significant impact on the actual white output of the bulb.

Chavtastic! Should go well with pikey personal plates like this example of imaginative spacing nicked from the internet

and ensure everyone knows that they're sharing the road with a tasteless idiot that can't even spell his own name after the sun sets and the silly plate is less noticable

For a proper education on bulbs including filters (tinted glass), glare and a bunch more including why pricks that fit HID kits into halogen headlights should be kicked repeatedly in the nuts until they're no longer able to breed start here... http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/bulbs.html The reason why the French were onto something with yellow headlights is covered under 'dangerous, illegal blue bulbs'.

Beaten to it with the daniel stern link but can't be bothered to edit things now

What ever the light output, the law says 55watts and nothing about the light output, what ever the output they will not be so bright as xenon so no worries
While wattage is the normal one mentioned with regards to legality the ECE regulations mentioned cover a hell of a lot more. Luminous flux/lumens for example which have min / max values and can vary a lot for a given wattage which is what gives the wiggle room for tinted bulbs... run 'em hotter so that after filtering out some of the light they still meet the regs. Bonus is they typically don't last as long so you sell more bulbs. ECE R37 in full... http://www.unece.org/fileadmin/DAM/trans/main/wp29/wp29regs/r037r5e.pdf
Gas discharge/HIDs are covered by ece r98... http://www.unece.org/fileadmin/DAM/trans/main/wp29/wp29regs/R098r3e.pdf

The cynic in me thinks that their marketing department reckons that a significant chunk of those 'not chosen' will choose to buy them so they don't feel left out...
We're opening up the offer to all of our supported forums, & will begin to contact the chosen testers late next week. If we dont get back to you - please dont be offended that you haven't been chosen but we only have limited stock!
Remember that unless you get the right [cough] 'sale' [/cough] or promo code ECP are a chunk more expensive than their sister company carparts4less...

Philips know what they are doing and they will be on Ebay the cheapest of all before long.

Only 7 choosen forums (out of 70) and yes - we've had huge feedback so as we mentioned' not everybody will get a set (plus is doesn't help that we've got a 50/50 split of H4's & H7's whilst the market is 70/30 :(

As it stands, all of the H7's have been accounted for However we still have some H4's if any members are interested :)

If you do want a H4, please drop me a PM with your name, address & prefered colour!

This rough and ready but shows why blue tinted lamps are useless, the eye is more sensitive to green and yellow light than blue......but green headlamps suck!:D

Interesting optical chart, almost the same as pigments in the way that we see them and the way that they behave.

That chart is a bit misleading because no headlight emits only a narrow colour range.
All headlights give off pretty much the complete visible spectrum (white light), although different headlight technologies or filters can shift the 'colour temperature' away from daylight white.

Any filter will reduce light output on part of the spectrum to give a hue to the light, the total output being reduced by anything from minimal to a significant amount.

The lights on this thread have a coloured tip and base, most of the light hitting the reflector is not filtered by the coloured section so it's not going to make enough difference to be an issue.

There is a link to a photo of these bulbs earlier in the thread.

Hi All!

Thanks so much for your feedback (both positive and negative!) and thanks alot for the detailed information on colour output - its great! :D

The good news is that we've managed to share the samples across all of the forums, however unfortunately due to the massive demand the H7's have run out. (if you've requested H7, but have an alternative vehicle which uses H4, please feel free to drop me a PM with details and if you missed out, i'll add you to the H4 list!)

If you have been selected for testing, We'll drop you a PM tomorrow afternoon to advise of the dispatch and look forward to getting your opinions on the new range before we launch it!

Once again - Thanks for your input!

Pat

Not really misleading at all, it shows the complete spectrum and the eyes sensitivity to the colours in the spectrum, nothing to do with the colour temperature the bulbs are outputting (although that would be interesting).

Yes, which is what I alluded to earlier in the thread...........
