Hi all

I changed the prop center bearing whilst I had the old one out yesterday.

Today I have this noise:

Is the replacement (febi) bearing faulty?

Keep in mind I also changed the gearbox, so this new noise could be from the box.

Alex only thing i would do , is remove the propshaft and try it again, to see if it is the one or the other. But as you know marking of the propshaft before removal , so it is replaced in the same place you removed it from Did you check the little bearing inside the coupling some you need to put grease on before refitting the propshaft Could be the speedo cable disconect that first and try it .

Thanks, yes I marked up the prop before separating/removing. Also used the alignment marks themselves.

When you say the coupling, you mean the U joint? They seemed absolutely fine with no grinding or anything whilst off the car.

No speedo cable on these, all electronic.

Yeah, not a bad shout! This has holes on one side for the handbrake cable bracket so not possible to put it on backwards without having the handbrake swinging in the wind.

As we are talking about propshafts is it possible to replace the front propshaft coupling on the w124 m103 without taking out the whole propshaft? I have asked on the forum but get mixed reports .I need to talk to a member thats done this himself .

Yes it's fine. But bear this in mind....
You will have to force to push the propshaft back to remove the coupling . You should drop the centre bearing first!

Back again today. Seems to be temperature related. A cacophony of noises from 20 mph upwards. Very odd.

Looked again today, no witness marks on the prop or the rear propshafts, or the underside of the car. Spotted a bit of grease leaking from the new bearing, but suspect its normal:

I see the mounting holes are slotted, is there a reason for this to allow self alignment during fitting ? Never changed one... But wondering if the carrier is at an angle to the propshaft ? Just a thought !

thanks Taz, yes indeed, they are slotted to allow for installation without tension in the rubber carrier. When I installed it I left it limp and tightened it up again so there shouldn't be any tension.

Update. Ran it up whilst wheels where off the ground, and prodded around with a stethoscope.

100% noise is coming form the Meyle center bearing. Supplier wants me to remove it and send it to them so I can they can "test it". Its not likely I can remove the old one without damaging it. PAH! Will buy another and replace it at my own cost.
