Not only does that go some way to solve the non-payers issue but it also spreads the charges more fairly according to miles travelled and should also appeal to the green "polluter pays" vote. It's still not uncommon for a two-year old rep's car to be be handed in with way over 100K on the clock and the RFL charge for that vehicle is the same as one that cover a few thousand miles each year.

and the rep's car will have had tax credited against it too!!! Reclaim VAT on purchase and fuel and servicing and parts and wear and tear. Just saying'

Tax on fuel was always deemed as a no go due to those living in the sticks who would be unduly disadvantaged, seems reasonable enough, and as a lot of people do a long commute to work, so again seems reasonable

The £107 million loss from 775,000 vehicles we are losing a year is scandalous, especially as the DfT were warned this would happen. All those vehicles evading tax, insurance and MOT is a real problem

Yes. It's a bit of an eye opener... years ago when I went self-employed for a short period my accountant pointed out the things that can be claimed against earnings which Mr Revenue says is okay so long as it's always "reasonable".

That is a system I have supported for many years. A completely fair system :)

Where I have lived for many years, the system is nigh on foolproof.

The government transport department issues the license plates, embossed and hologrammed, and you have to collect these in person (every individual carries a government issued personal ID card, hologrammed and with photo). Each plate has embedded in it the date of road tax renewal.

Every year there is a loose equivalent of an Mot.

At the Testing station, you also renew your road tax and your insurance. You have a choice of brokers or agents for this, but it is done online while your car is being tested.

If you do not pay for the Mot the tax and the insurance there and then, the number plates are confiscated and the authority is automatically notified.

It is against the law for anyone else to make number plates, and of course both the police and the wardens can instantly read any passing plate and see its current state. False plates or no Mot etc? Car impounded until all fines, dues and storage costs have been paid.

Bit of a deterrent, that!

In April this year the self employed and small businesses were declared 'tax dodgers' by the Chancellor. That the government facilitated big business to not pay 13.8% Employers NICs in previous budgets escaped the Chancellor.

Other 'cost cutting' measures facilitated the PSC outbreak, where the tax take through PAYE dropped dramatically. Who didn't see that coming? So take loads off payroll to cut costs :confused: and lose the tax payable, 'kin idiot Gideon.

Lets see what the Budget brings and see if the self employed and small business are to be hammered again as planned. So much for entrepreneurial spirit.

A MP can claim travel and substance expenses over and above salary. Proposals say small businesses and the self employed have to pay out of their nett pay??? Go figure.

Another non story or just bad journalism? It was discussed on the radio today and the majority of these cars are not taxed for a few weeks or up to 2 months at most. It's thought to be due to cars being bought and sold, the tax cancelled automatically & the new owner waiting till the first of the month to re tax.

I heard that on Jeremy Vine at lunch time too. I felt that the so called aficionados on there came up with the unlikeliest of reasons rather than what is plainly and largely the just plain tax dodgers.

I have lived in France for the last 10 yrs and obviously have owned cars over there. The system is... no road tax and MOT’s every 2 yrs. Car insurance is quite cheap and they do not jam the price up every year.
Autoroutes are quite expensive to use but are well maintained and flow freely.
Nearly 300 quid road tax over here, roads jammed up and are badly maintained plus very tough annual tests. Insurance companies cannot wait to rip you off and fuel is on the whole 20% more expensive. I think drivers in the UK get the worst of all deals..

While I don't condone not paying road tax (VED), and before someone points out that it isn't road tax I can't see where else I will use my vehicle,
as it's electronic (internet) and we can tax online, then sorn online, but still have to pay a full month tax at each side of the deal the Gov't screwing us by not allowing a daily tax might be seen as a justification for screwing them back.

road tax should simply be an element of fuel tax , and under another bullshite guise it prbrably is, no easy way to dodge road tax then , unless yr running on red or chip oil .

Just interested ..... what took you to French France? I mooted the idwa to EmilysMum years ago, but she wasn't having any of it. :( Though it'd be a trek 'home' to visit my beautiful grand daughter

......

If ever there was an understatement :) There's no one on them.

We had the opportunity to sell our business and as we were both in our early 50’s we decided to move out there. We looked at Italy first but found the area around Carcassonne to our liking. Normally to see family, I fly back and forth by Ryanair from Carcassonne to EMA or MAN.. cheap and quick (cheapest return flight I ever had was €3)! We are now considering selling our old manor house and downsizing and possibly looking at Portugal next. Stuck in the UK for the forseeable future though, looking after mother-in-law..

I have just renewed my Road Fund Tax on-line. I have opted for the direct debit so I don't have to bother about future renewals as they will be done automatically. On the V11 it says that the monthly payments will be £16.83p, when you complete the form on-line the monthly amount comes to £17.06p. That's another £5.25p per annum. What a b****y scam !! :(

I experienced similar with my wife's car the V11 said £150 but when I renewed online it was £155. It's not exactly a scam but the V11s was sent out before the May increase and the tax was due for renewal in May. The DVLA could have got it right though.

Funny how it costs more to pay for road tax by direct debit when electric & gas etc paying by direct debit will give you a discount o_O

You pay in advance for road tax (credit), retrospectively for utilities (in theory!)
Just saying, sorry to be a pedant ;)

I've simply overlooked renewal twice and been fined both times within a month. My bit of England is thoroughly policed and I approve of it. I liked the discs much better, because if I forgot I was reminded by family and friends. I wondered if they'd eliminated the discs precisely so that people would forget and end up paying more in fines - that's how it's affected me. This forum suggests to me that only SE England still enjoys enforcement.

I've always managed to remember to tax my cars so have never tested the system, though this thread has reminded me that my Fortwo needs doing .....
