Cheers Guys, this is all great advice.
I had my Indy check out a few issues with the car and pleased to say nothing drastic, main items were the engine mounts and gearbox mount well and truly past their use by date. So much so that it makes a bad vibration when idling in or out of gear. The other issue we had was with the auto shift, that turned out to be the air flow sensor. 2 front tyres showing wheel alignment problems, and of course the fuel tank baffles free floating around in the tank. 1/4 tank or less no noise, same with a full tank. So far clocked up nearly 900mls and service 'B' is now over due. This will be booked in for next week.
I have since found out that the air flow meter wasn't sitting in its place in the intake but floating around in the breeze. I guess this is down to someone not knowing what they were doing? Now slotted back in where it belongs and it has transformed the car. Engine mounts next.
However while I had the air cleaner off I noticed this and wasn't sure if there should be a vent on top of what looks like a vent tube for the transmission?

Sorry it's dirty, can you believe we were going to get it washed on our way home this afternoon and completely forgot!!!

Peter

Glad its had a relatively good bill of health!

The tube is the gearbox dipstick tube, and its missing the small plug that goes in the top. probably a good idea to put something there to stop bits falling in it.

You can knock the gearbox plug of when removing the air cleaner dead easy on these.

What is the mileage of this car please, I still have the original mounts at 89k

I think it has had some monkeys playing with it in the past year, as that is when the first owner sold it, the second has had it under a year so I am guessing it had some one playing around with the air cleaner has had fairly new filters in it as there wasn't any dust particles or debris inside and they were white, well as white as new ones look
It has done 105ks though the last stamp in the book is 88k.

Peter

What would be the recommended spark plugs to fit to this car?

You can get all 16 for under £100 on Ebay, I have done a DIY on this engine on changing the plugs.

The ones selling on Ebay know what they should be, I will try and find out as I have forgotten

Ok great, I did get a price from Europarts which came to £102 Denso range. I have had a good run with these plugs and installed a set in to the SLK

The SL is booked in for its B service next Friday, however tonight it put me in the bad books with her who must be obeyed.
The outside boot release handle sticks in the open position, a simple fix with a can of WD40, well that what I thought it would be!!! Sprayed it with the stuff, worked the release handle until it started to free up and then closed the boot lid, and that's where it is all going wrong as the boot will not respond to the door switch, the key fob or the key which inserts into the lock.
Have I up set the micro switch as well as the wife?
Should I be worried or will things reset themselves over night?

Its possible something has broken internally. Does the boot release button on the door still open the boot?

The key should turn so that you can pull the handle, you must hold the key turned at the same time.

I got the boot lid open with how you said Malcolm, but it is still not working off the door or fob any more, maybe another job during the service next week.
Many thanks
Peter

Is all the locking OK for the doors, if so the vacuum actuator could have failed and not expensive.

Everything else is working as it should, just the boot lid not working, I am fairly certain it was me moving the boot release handle on the boot lid itself trying to free it up has coursed this to misbehave. The good news is the handle doesn't stick now

If you need the instructions to remove the boot lining just ask.

That would be wonderful Malcolm, yes please let me have the boot lining removal instructions, actually while on the subject of instructions, would it be possible for the engine mount removal procedure as well. I may start this job tonight?
Many thanks.

I have sent you a PM, re the engine mounts the inlet side is easy but the exhaust side is harder, I should be able to print off during the day.

Jasper blue is a fabulous colour, it can change in different lights. They only used it for a couple of years or so.
