Well the 70 Amphr battery needed over a 6 hour charge with a 7.0 Amp charger it’s not just the tyre pressures most of these car outlets ‘forget’ to check before vehicles leave their premises ‘if it starts push it our the door’. With my low mileage I’m pretty sure this is going to be a regular occurrence (certainly more often than the 212 probably due to an off duty heavier load) I might consider fitting a battery condition monitor
As my earlier post, I live in blissful ignorance of the workings of the 48v system on my CLS! {And I didn't know I had a 12v battery as well - or do I?] I have never seen the 48v battery, it is hidden under a bolted down cover in the bottom of the boot - the only reason I know it is there is that there was a recall over the securing of the battery and the service tech told me that they had added some extra bracing/stiffening to it. The electricals on this car have never given me the slightest issues.

Don't worry about it!

I wouldn’t say I’m worried it’s more that I like to understand how the 12/48V system works mainly due to the car sitting for long periods and my low mileage nowadays - both my cars require a top-up charge at least twice a year due to this. When I checked the 12V battery it was sitting at 12.1V desperately in need of a charge
Interesting to hear your comments about the location of the batteries mine are the opposite and yes you will have a 12V battery in the engine compartment probably under a plastic cover next to the passenger side bulkhead.
Good to hear you haven’t had any problems with the car I really am quite impressed with what MB have achieved with their MHEV engine design especially the AMG versions with the addition of a 48V compressor

I had a look and yes I do - at least there is a red positive terminal cover visible in a cut out in the cover. So 12v in the front, 48v in the back. Whilst not achieving E53 performance from the lowest spec petrol engine (1991cc, 4 cyl, 300 bhp/220kW + 10kW! and now discontinued, at least in the CLS) I am very happy with it. Compare to my SL400, which might emerge from my garage on 1st April (weather permitting) which gets 360bhp/270kw from a 3.0l V6 with twin turbos.

Interesting occurrence driving this car the other day I was using a cross county B road (your average village inter-connecter) which had 2 hump back bridges the type that bridge canals. The second of these bridges resulted in a loud metallic crack from under the car at the top of the hump which obviously concerned me it was very loud and sounded like the exhaust bottoming out or worse still the gearbox.

A bit of head scratching and investigation later it appears that the car has skid pads so I assume the car did bottom out on the top of the bridge and the skid pad did its job

Apparently most Mercedes petrol cars (>2018) are now fitted with a GPF (Gasoline Particulate Filter) - seems I can’t get away from these devices lol. Anyway for those with late reg petrol cars this is a good write-up on the subject:

Our old 1998 C43 estate used to bottom out on dips occasionally. Part and parcel of the lowered suspension settings designed to keep fast luxo-sports cars feeling 'sporty'.

GPF and DPF are very different systems. Thus has a more detailed explanatio:

Yes, hence the quip ‘I can’t get away from them’ my E350cdi was equipped with a DPF which I never had a problem with thankfully.

Seems both articles are similar.

The OPF can, like DPF be deleted using exhaust modification to the tail end but would, no doubt, invalidate warranties and breach MOT rules....

Power washing the drive today so I thought I’d drive the E53 over to my daughters and leave it there for the day. This was the first really cold start with the car and what a difference to the engine the cool denser air made it really came alive in the lower rev band and the M256 sounded glorious what a great start to the day. Just starting to feel more comfortable with the car and absolutely no regrets with the purchase

Thoughts on owning the E53 after 3 months. It always takes me a while to get used to a ‘new’ car noises and characteristics always seen amplified in nature probably due to listening for problems that don’t exist so pleased that phase is over and feel more relaxed and comfortable with the car.

One thing I did notice from the first drive was that the steering wheel was off centre to the right by a few degrees which was a little irritating but that has now sorted itself out I can only put it down to the new Michelins that the dealer fitted wearing even with use.

I’m thoroughly enjoying the car it really is a wolf in sheep’s clothing and AMG have done a really good job with the exhaust note it always lets you know the potential of the engine without being intrusive quite pleased with that. The cabin design is exceptional IMO even though it’s been around 6 years it still looks fresh MB really got that right with the W/S213 especially with full leather and black open pore wood

So, absolutely no regrets to date and would make the same decision again and can recommend the car to anyone who is thinking of buying one.

I’ll keep updating this thread occasionally with the good and the bad hopefully more of the former as time and the miles go by…

Have you got/used the driver's package, tried mine in earnest yesterday, crazy how it can come to a complete halt with cruise set at 50mph with no hands on the wheel then starts up and drives off all on it's own like something out of a sci-fi film!

I really liked the interior of my W213, really felt special and a great place to be for many miles and hours.

Pleased yours is working out. If I had a need/desire I’d have another 213

Unfortunately not the car ticked the most of the boxes so wasn’t prepared to let it pass I don’t know the exact production figures but not that many estates are made

I knew from the very first time I went out in a W213 that I would buy one at some point it just needed the right engine and the M256 clinched it for me. Very occasionally a manufacturer comes up with something very special and I thought the interior of the car was one of those moments.

I’d really like a spare wheel for the E53 but reluctant to pay £400 for a Roadhero spare (with a Chinese tyre) I’d sooner spend the money on a good genuine S/H wheel. The front is ET20 and the rear ET49 what’s the general opinion on buying a spare REAR which will fit both F/R as a get you home measure I assume that mounted on the front it will sit out about 30mm but that shouldn’t be an issue driving at a reasonable speed - OR should I forget the idea?
