The reason why the "cruise"..Limiter function isn't showing in display is because it's in Cruise mode, not Limiter. Push the stalk in until the yellow light is on. ;)

Thanks diesel man. Prior to collecting the car from the dealer, the light on the stalk used to shine fairly brightly when the stalk was pushed in but after collecting the car it was virtually invisible, even at night.

OK, waited 1 hour with key in ignition and the key did not resync or whatever it was supposed to do.

I have now found the post you spoke of Alexander and I have taken my key apart and the coil is attached and no signs of a dry solder joint. See photos below. Thanks to Malcolm's post by the way it has helped me enormously.

So.....I remain unable to start the car. It's looking more and more like an ignition switch or other major problem:(

Any other ideas, I really have now run out of them completely???

Looking for an Indy in my area and bracing myself for in case of I end up at the main dealer.

Can you please tell me how you managed to completely disassemble the key?

You need a flat bladed knife with the end 2mm bent to 45º and insert it between the case and the nylon strip to release the plastic catch.

Well I guess it’s difficult for a newbie…

Do you mean at the end of the bottom, which is seen in the second picture?
Actually will it be possible to assemble it back?
Do you have a picture of such a knife?

Yes as in picture 2 between the case and the white nylon strip, it will click back into place again

With the knife you have to insert it and slide it along to release the little catch that you can see in my picture

Thank you I managed to disassemble it :)

Well it looks good; nothing is broken so far I see....what is your opinion?
It looks like I will have to make MB dealers in Bulgaria "Balkan Star" happy and buy a new EIS....

What is wrong with the key is it the locking or it will not turn in the ignition

I can lock and unlock doors, but when I put the key in the ignition it doesn't make the usual click, the steering wheel remains locked and I cannot turn the key in any direction...

OK you have that coil on the tin end, it will either be a wire just broken off the pin on the end that its soldered too or the coil is not making contact with the tracts on the printed circuit board,, this is a matter of heating the track and pressing down on the coil.

Warning, that wire on the coil will only be seen with a good magnifying glass to see if it is connected, if you bend the wire around it will break off and that is the end of it unless you replace the coil

When this happened to me it was the KEY, and it was the yellow tanatalum capacitor next to the pickup coil that was the fault - I fixed this for a cost of 60 pence.

EIS fault is LESS likely than a key fault.

The bad news is that Mercedes won't repair keys, and will charge about £250 for a new one. Plus of course you need a vast ream of documentation to even begin the key ordering process.

Thank you all :) It was the key and a car locksmith fixed it for a couple of minutes and 7.5 euro :)
if I had to change the EIS, the key and anothor part it could have costed up to 1200 euro...

A wire breaks off the end coil on those keys

And can it be soldered back on?

I ask because occasionally this happens to me. If I remove and replace the key in the slot a couple of times it will eventually work.

There are 2 types of key the long on and the short,,in the long one,se picture, the coil is on the end of the key and the coil can come dry jointed where the coil is soldered on,,it means heating the pcb and pressing the coil down,,too much solder and the pcb will not go back in the case

The other fault is the wire breaks on the pins at the end and great care is needed when doing the re soldering, if the wire breaks off, thats the end of it

Mine is the short one Malcolm. Is there not a coil on that one?
