On a side note, if anyone has a wooden inlaid steering wheel with the flappy paddles that they want to sell, maybe we could have a deal with the aluminium trim that I now have available? :)
It is the proper aluminium trims, not the plain painted silver things.

You know how some days your car decided to be awkward?
Well it's one of those days.
I need an MOT before we go on holiday soon and my normal MOT man is on holiday but that's sorted.
Had the wheel alignment done at a local garage and they bolloxed it up and have had 5 goes at getting it right and it's still not right so booked it in for a hunter session. Got an email back saying they couldn't do it as their machine is bust.
Then went and looked under the bonnet and spotted this:
PXL_20220815_150534185.jpg

So ordered one via Autodoc as I doubt that will survive 2000 miles.
Fingers crossed it arrives in time!
Also this morning took the 230 round to my usual garage (can't use 251 as MOT expired) and you guessed it 'bong' and a white ABC message.

It's not been a good day.

PS. Anyone got any good tricks for getting that pulley off?
As in how to lock the crank?

Getting it off is the easy bit (IMPACT!), although we have a tool that goes inside the pulley and locks it (must find that tool actually).

Doing the bolt up to the required torque is the hard bit

R230 SL500 - oh yeah!
Been doing a fair bit on the CLK in the last week or so.
Finally sorted the twisted passenger seatbelt, waterproofed the roof and am 3/4 of the way through the interior trim change from the cold aluminium to wood.
Personally I love the difference as it makes the car interior look so much more warm and luxurious. See what you think.... View attachment 78741 View attachment 78743 View attachment 78745 View attachment 78747 View attachment 78750 View attachment 78751

Loving the change to the wood inserts!

I've just ordered a tool that goes in place of the starter to lock the crank.
I have a 6 foot long tube of thick wall 40mm stainless that slips nicely over a breaker bar....

In the past I've wedged a breaker bar against a chassis rail on the defender then hit the starter. Always works...
Not so keen with that method on the R Class!

Question. I've read somewhere there is a hole with a blanking plate that can be removed on the opposite side of the engine to the starter - presumably to allow starter to be fitted to either side. Is that correct? It will be much easier if so.

Yes there is usually a hole on both sides.

That tool will work! The inside pulley tool is for M113K, but the holder for the ring gear works on normal ones too.

Yesterday....
Ripped apart the interior of the 230 to try and find why theres no sound from the headunit.
Found lots of Malcolm's custom wiring which was a challenge to unravel and a fuse under the centre console that had blown that powered some of his add-ons so now the dash cam works again.
Still no sound though.
Diags on the head unit suggest the D2B loop is down as the headunit can't see any other device (amplifier, cd changer, voice control, telephone are all offline). Not convinced another fuse isn't blown somewhere even though I've checked them all.
Well sods law.
Today the audio burst into life by itself whilst driving.
It looks like a power issue as when it burst into life the 6310 phone started charging in its holder in the armrest as well.
Looks like time to go hunting power feeds and earths.

Sounds like an earth issue to me.

From bitter experience tracing the phone cradle wiring is a whirling son of a b1tch!

To be honest I don't think the issue is the phone - I think it's just a part of a larger issue.
When the phone cradle wasn't working the entire optical D2B bus was down. I have a more than sneaking feeling the issue is the cd changer as it won't read discs even though the discs work fine in the head unit.

Yep, the optical fibre does loop through the changer.

Sneaking feeling. Didn’t that car get some boot water ingress a few years back?

It did, but all the audio stuff is under the back 'seat' so well away from where the water was.

The wiring isn’t exactly “standard” in your particular R230… I seem to remember quite a bit of additional wiring in the drivers sill
