I have had a problem with my auxiliary battery and on searching about replacement I came across SBC stop and hold function. What is SBC stop and hold Function and how does it work?

SBC "Hold" is great, When you pull up to a Stop, Depress the Break Pedol, SBC (HOLD) will come on and it will hold the car in that position on the brakes untill you depress the accelerator to move off.

As per above it’s a convenience function for when you’re at traffic lights.
You come to a stop then press the pedal a bit more (an extra push once stoped) then remove your foot from the pedal.
You can then just press the accelerator when you want to set off.

As above, extra push on the brake pedal will engage it ( if it’s working, it does rely on the aux battery too )

Thank you. I saw this where you set it via your cruise control to turn it on and off and then do not need to use the brake to set it.

Where did you read that?
SBC Stop and Hold are activated as described above.
Nothing to do with the cruise control stalk.

Thats the SBC Stop functionality which is different to SBC Hold. Not all SBC equipped cars have the Stop function.

SBC Hold and SBC Stop are two different systems, hold is as described, SBC Stop I am not sure, I believe it was either only on early SBC equipped models or it was removed by coding for safety issues, or possibly might only be one certain models in certain markets.
But I bet not many have heard of it, link below to someone demonstrating it.

SBC stop, useful but can see why it would be turned off.

I shall have to have a try on my S211.

Didn't even know that feature existed, it's obviously hidden so it can't be turned on and off.
Is it connected to Distronic?

Some SBC equipped cars have neither SBC hold or SBC stop.

Yes. It relies on distronic sending objects in front and applying the brakes to bring the car to a stop.
Malcolm's 216 had it but the 230 has neither stop or hold.

Then I had it on 'Malcolm 2' , it obviously worked as the brakes did jab on a few times on the M6 North in the rain (remember those heady days we drove distances on Motorways?). SBC Hold never worked properly, the one error I just couldn't get to the bottom off no matter how much money I threw at it!

So the stop or hold are nothing to do with distronic, stop was removed from software in SBC around 2005 and retroactively removed to earlier cars when they went in to dealers to extend the timeout of SBC system.
Stop was a weird feature that was toggled via the cruise control stalk as the OP mentions, and was sort of useful in stop start traffic. Essentially it was like hold but on pressing the accelerator it didn’t disengage automatically (until you reach 15 mph iirc or flicked the cruise stalk away from you) but bring you back to a “stop” should you release the accelerator, the way it did the stopping though was a bit abrupt if you just let go of the accelerator so you had to come off it slowly and it would then bring you back to a halt. I had it still on my S211 and tried it a few times but found I had better control just using the brake pedal, the other weird bit was the brake lights would be on all the time too which may have been part of the reason it was removed later on.

One of those weird things where it was only available on the 211 or 230, little like the OM647 only being in the early 211, not a clue why but just one of those things

That'll be the reason then why my 2004 car had SBC Hold and the 2005 car doesn't. I did use you it quite often and found it really good, now I don't have it I have miss it
