I hope you don't have a copyright on those many, many photo's as I've copied them into a folder.
I expect they will be very useful in the future should I need to strip down the Viano engine, thanks.
i think there is a diesel v8 in one of the later g wagon as well. The new ones are purple in colour
There is a Diesel V8 in the ML420CDi
That lòoks like classic oil starvation to that crank journal. You can see where the bearing has picked up on the journal.
That crank need a checking by a reconditioning place to check for journal wear and possible regrind. If you have compressed air blow through the gallery from the main to the big end to check it's clear.

It was put in the GL, don't think the G had it

If you decide to rebuild it, grind in the valve seats and fit new valve seals, it would be false economy not to while the heads are off.
When you get the crank checked.
Take the block and the rods with caps fitted and torqued up.
To check they haven't gone oval.
That's impressive , if that was in central London you could retire and live off the sale . Keep up the good work !Well...it's not the smallest of sheds but I couldn't fit a car inside.. View attachment 39964 View attachment 39965

As I understand, you've been MB technician...I am looking everywhere for information about installing new rods after the removal of old ones but can't really find anything anywhere...WIS advises to put new ones if they have ever been opened because of them being cracked or something and they wouldn't be fit for purpose...is that something that they do at dealership...hoping someone would know...
