SLK as second (Non daily commuter) car?

Just arranged to swop my 1993 Porsche 968 tip cab for a 2008 R171 facelift SLK280 in Fire Opal Red (with perfect paintwork!) so I'm biased!! That V6 is lovely, but you have to do your research to make sure the engine number is away from the rpoblem area, which mine is.

Being an R172 it will be well away from those early V6 issues!

My wife is on her second R171 200K. Both great cars no issues with either did 90K miles in the first one.
The fuel consumption is not great 32 round town, & up to 38 mpg on runs, the V6 fuel consumption is not much worse.
Road tax is £200 & will be more on the V6 versions.

172's didn't start until 2011?

Meaning it's well away from the issues that plagued some of the earlier M272 engines. The R172 came with the M276.

Not only is it an R171 facelift with an engine number far higher than any with the earlier problems, it was a swop where I'll get many beer vouchers into my bank account - for me that's a first! Means I can "invest" some of the "profit" in repairs and upgrades to herself's S204 (bonnet and roof respray where the lacquer has lifted, followed by mop and ceramic coat, reversing camera, front parking sensors, sort out the NTG4 so I can update beyond 2014-15, maybe also dashcam), as well as getting a few things done to the SLK AND (!!) have 4 figures to find something else to do with!!

With regards to a 24/15 Reg R172 what about rust? I’ve read some horror stories about SLKs suffering horrendous rust problems. Was that only only on the R171s?

Should only be the R170's, which were not galvanised. The R171 (and presumably R172) are galvanised.

R171 is only a subframe rust issue (as far as I’m aware)
