hi riceburner, we may have to re-christen you oil burner, you need to establish if you are losing oil or burning oil ?, i would suspect the former.
i recently changed my oil and filter and because i overtightened the bowl on the "O" ring i had a serious leak, it did not show for some time as the 15mm under panels can store 2 litres of oil in the sponge rubber before the dripping on the driveway shows.
the rear crank oil seal and the sump seal are easy to check. if your problem is burning oil you will observe the blue smoke, especially on cold starts if it is worn valve guides or piston rings. my merc has covered 190,000 miles and does not lose or consume more than one litre every 5,000 miles. my mk4 toyota supra rocket ship, at 42,000 miles consumes no oil at 5,000 miles. in my experience if any car consumes any amount of coolant or oil, then there is somthing wrong.
many car owners live with leaks etc, as it is cheaper to do this than have the problem solved. i am a professional enginer and could not accept this situation. best of luck and hope you find out where your oil is going. herbiemercman. ps: excuse me ranting on, but i mean well.
