The guy I spoke to said it would be difficult to fit a piece of pipe because of the odd angles at which the pipe enters and leaves the cat.
Yes, it is an odd shape. I watched while they did the pipe insert on mine. Was a bit tricky but went OK. Didn't watch when they replaced the pipe with the little muffler. Quite possibly they could have taken a bit more pipe out to accommodate the muffler.
Maybe you need to talk to a better tradesman.
If the exhaust shop starts talking about "illegalities", perhaps you could just ask them for a suitable sized resonator/muffler and take it somewhere else to get fitted. I can't really advise as I don't know your rules/regs etc or your local businesses. Is there a local indie who would fit it for you? Seems plenty on this forum are doing such work.
