Need to replace both rear brake backplates on a 51 plate E320, and was wondering how easy is it to remove the rear hubs? Car is a WDB210

Not easy at all, many cut them in ½ and join up on the car, there are some links to this method somewhere

I don't think the chop in two trick will work on a rear brake, since the plate is the carrier for the parking brake and it must be in one piece.
The hub flange is pressed into the bearing and when it is pulled out destroys the bearing cartridge, a new bearing is then needed.

The bearing is a cartridge which contains a pair of back to back angular contact bearings along with the required seals, pulling the hub will pull out at least one inner race and one of the two seals. It is most unlikely that the bearing could be satisfactorily be re-assembled.

Big job.

Thanks and that is what I feared. A few have removed the rear hubs to do this

The question must be why do they need replacing ?
Various pieces could be welded in and chassis blacked to carry things.
