Reading fault codes

I have a 98 SLK 230 (170) and need to read out fault codes. It doesn't have an OBD socket but does have the 38 pin connector in the engine bay. I got an adaptor today and connected this to a Maxiscan code reader which I normally use and it can't talk, any ideas?

Adapters are hit and miss but will only ever give the generic engine codes. No use whatever for any other module.

To read all codes requires a reader with a multiplexer.
The 38 pin socket has one pin per module. To query the ECU is (usually) pin 4. The ABS is on a different pin, as is the TCU, SRS and so on.

Your choices see seriously limited. Star obviously or the Carsoft system (as opposed to iCarsoft).

Sure but I just want the generic codes

It powers up but no comms, do you know what protocol they use?

Tried scantool and USB/OBD cable but no joy there either

After a bit of digging the 98 model doesn't implement OBDII, it is Mercedes only so no diagnostics for me. I tried the LED but that didn't work either so its carsoft or STAR if you find yourself in the same boat as me
