My wife had a accident today where she was hit in the rear in are 2010 e250 estate. The bumper needs to be replaced but it has also bent the metal behind the bumper which looks like it has pushed into the diesel tank a bit and the two headrest went off in the car too .just wondered if anyone would know whether I should prepare for the car to be written off .any help would be good thanks

Without pictures and more details it's hard to say for sure but it does sound likely.

Hi,
I hope your wife's OK.I'm sure she'll have a Personal Injury claim af least. Car's probably not a write off, unless the floor has rippled. The steel beam inside the Bumper acts as a shock absorber, you'll have to wait for the insurance assessors to report.

Basically, as insurance is involved, it will all boil down to economics....what the repairs will cost, versus the current market value ( pre accident) If the inner bumper reinforcement is damaged,( unless it's very slight) then it will need to be checked out / repaired on a car bench, which will restore it to Factory spec's. This is expensive. And bear in mind, that the Insurance will always take the best cost saving option for them....so while technically, it may well be very repairable, financially they may write it off. You will have to wait for the insurance decision.

Can you buy it back off them for a nominal fee and find someone to repair it?

If its not too personal a question to ask, what were the figures involved? Estimated Repair costs, estimated value of the vehicle pre-accident? And did the assessor offer any residual valuation?

Rather than just replace why not try and see if you can get a S213 E220d as a replacement. There’s some great deals out there so you might do well.

Write off values are generally poor in that you orobably eoukdnt want to risk replacing your loss with a like-for-like forecourt car not knowing how carefully it was driven or looked after. In such case, you may need to look at a more recent car at much more money than the toral loss sum of money the insurer gives you.

I just went through this with the wife's 57 plate Nissan Micra with 67k miles. Rear ended. Repair cost £3k, market value £2100. Her car had annual servicing and no advisories on the last 5 years MOTs.

These guys toss all these arguments out of the frame. Similar 57 plate Micra cars were knackered high milers (90k - 110k miles), missed servicing, MOT history riddled with advisories. Ended up paying £8k for a 16 plate Hyundai i20 with 24k miles and 2 years balance of manufacturer warranty. Insurance scamsters all of them.

Search on Autotrader, and Pistonheads. You can print off copies of cars similar to yours to challenge any low bid you are given.

See if MB specialist dealers have any for sale?

Don’t accept first offer.

Repairs would be prohibitive if the rear door shut lines had closed up at all, rear quarter panel damage etc - sounds like rear floor must have shifted a bit......

Insurance companies do sometimes surprise you if it’s a none fault claim, when the wife’s previous car was written off they were on the money with a like for like replacement cost (actually about £250 over a replacement iirc),
