Giving the trusty W168 a checkover and noticed the O/S cv boot was beginning to split.

It’s rather easy to change it with a Bailcast Universal split boot ((£12 on the bay of dreams)

Trimmed new boot to suit.

Jack car up, wheel off.

Angle grinder cut the old stainless boot clamps in five seconds.

Craft knife cut old boot off.

New boot over driveshaft and glued the small end, holding it for 1min.

Then glued the rest of it in stages, holding to ensure good adhesion.

Filled new boot with grease (supplied)

New stainless clamp trimmed, then attached & crimped using an old pair of pincers that were my dads, and have sat in a drawer for 30?yrs unused (cheers Dad).

The whole process took about 45mins. (Including finding the pincers)

I've often thought of using these split boots, but thought the grease would get into the parts you have to glue and make them impossible to stick.

Well, It would if I did them anyway...

I've generally gone with stretchy boots, which means the CVJ doesn't have to be taken apart. Saves the embarrassment of groveling around on the driveway looking for all those greasy balls that have scattered everywhere.

Let us know how it lasts and I might reconsider.

I only put the grease in after it was glued.

actually after done, I got the bit of boot trimmed off the ‘wide end’ and glued it.
After 15 mins I couldn’t pull it apart- and I really tried - so I’m pretty confident it won’t fall apart too soon
