230 sl

Can someone help. I have a 230 SL and the gear shift has come slightly loose. I think its the linkage between gear lever and lower shirt lever. Idont know how to get to this? does to chrome plate on top lift up.? I have recently had new carpets fitted and these are stuck over the area and...
