I've only been in a 170 a couple of times but I've been running a 171 for nearly a year as a daily driver.

According to the data it's 30mm longer wheelbase and 72 mm longer overall and 65mm wider.

Boot storage is 63 ltrs bigger (with roof retracted)

The chassis is also stiffer

Not sure what engine you have in your 170 but go for a test in a V6 and you'll have a smile on your face - just check the engine hasn't the balance shaft issue and that the rear subframe hasn't rotted.

I spent 8.5 hours driving mine on Sunday - 35 mpg and 53 mph average for the trip. I find the seats very comfortable and the noise it makes is very nice. I run it on standard 16's as I've tried them with 18's and they're not comfortable.

im 6ft tall so comfort is a lil bit of a sacrifice in the 170 but I don't go massive distances in it really so not a big problem

I'm not but my eldest is 6'2" and he's driven and passenger-ed in it a number of times without any comfort issues. He has long legs and seat goes back far enough for him.

good to know BC , ive had a lot of drop top cars in the past but always enjoyed the roadster style set up more , there really isn't a need to replace the 170 but I do like the more modern looking cars

I've owned both: an R170 230 and an R171 280 V6. The R171 struck me as a far more "grown up" car with a bigger cockpit and a better ride. The V6 engine obviously made a difference and you could imagine it was an SL - which I later graduated to.

The r170 is based on a w202 C class platform, with a steering box and double wishbone front suspension.. The r171 is w203 C class underneath, so steering rack and macpherson struts up front. The r171 is a more dynamic drive, but I still enjoy the older car.

I have a R170 in 230k form and l love it. Fantastic fun and in my opinion it's nicer looking than the R171. Each to their own though.
