Well, the original problem came back, I seemed to be leaking transmission oil from somewhere. Upon closer inspection it was the flexible part of the transmission cooler lines. Replaced them today, not too difficult a job apart from getting a spanner on the line connected directly to the radiator, and now that's one less leak :D

Highly recommend replacing these, they are the rubber hoses with the spiral wound metal armouring over them. I dread to think of the transmission damage if they were to fail completely and dump out all the fluid.

Changed the engine oil and filter as well, and she is purring like a kitten, well more like a tiger cub from the growl of the exhaust ;)

Hi Richard

As you are a man who seems to enjoy spannering more than driving, I hereby offer to buy your car once you are convinced nothing more needs doing, thereby freeing you up to start another project. (and giving me the best refurbished model anywhere!)

On a less happy note, as a fellow owner of a1991 R129, you hgave terrified me with the amount of work you have found that needed doing . . .

But thanks for documenting it all for the rest of us.

Jon

Richard is a very clever guy and one of the only people that I have known to fix the ADS, yet alone all of the other work

I am a frustrated mechanic, but ended up doing IT instead. Mind you, it does pay for all the parts ;)

You still have enthusiasm Malcolm, I just re-read your ABC fluid loss thread this morning, that's not a man without enthusiasm :)

Well, the past couple of days have been new brake disks and pads, but the parking brake still doesn't seem to be very efficient.

I have cleaned and lubricated the mechanism, which was new a couple of years ago, the shoes have lots of lining on them, and I adjusted the star wheels so they just released so there is no slack there. I can only assume the brake cables have stretched over the years, has anyone changed the front cable from the pedal to the compensator..?

Malcolm, if you read this, I would appreciate the WIS procedure for changing the front cable, I know how to do the rear cables as I did those on my W124 a couple of years ago.

Well, I have the cable, but that procedure looks a bit unpleasant, I suspect I am going to need to beg a favour from a friend in the trade with a four post lift!

Hi Richard, i thought i had private messaged you, but i cant seem to find messaging on the forum now? I have a couple of questions about the bleeding of the ADS system on the r129. same as you, i completely stripped the whole system down from the ADS valve block back, replacing pipes, accumulators etc. Mine is ADS 11. So did you keep the car on the jacks on the body and then jack up each wheel as well when bleeding? As the problem i see is getting to the top of the strut to bleed it, when the wheel is on.

Sorry, I read this and forgot to reply.

I didn’t have to bleed the front struts, just the rears, and I cracked the unions on the side of the rear struts open and bled off fluid with the engine running until no more air came out.

mind you, this was all ADS1 with no computer control to speak of, so was able to force flow of fluid by manually moving the height adjustment fill/drain valve at the rear of the car.
