Hopefully some of you gents may have reached a quiet period of the Christmas season and could offer me some advice. A local used car dealer has an H reg 260E auto. Price £2000, pale metallic blue with cloth interior. The bodywork is absolutely unmarked, not even a chip and I cannot see any signs of repainting. Interior is in excellent condition with no signs of wear. Mileage is 114,000 with main dealer history to 90,000 and local service stamps thereafter. It starts easily and runs quietly without signs of oil smoke or anything untoward. I have arranged to drive it tomorrow, please can you offer any tips on what I should be looking for? Sorry to ask for so much information, but I'm a complete MB newbie. Any advice on general care and maintainence and finally can anyone recommend an independent repairer in East Devon. Thanks.

Firstly check that you get a nice smooth gear change, especially in the lower gears and that they don't slip. I would also find anice long hill or two and give it a good hard run up the hill to work the the motor. When you return open the hood and observe the water piping for leaks, also the water reservour botttle overflow to determine whether or not there is exsesive pressurising of the cooling system. Then I would do the normaal checks like pulling the oil dipstick and opening the oil filler cap etc.
