The old mpg chestnut has been done a few times but never (?) specific to one engine so:
My mpg is RUBBISH on my 2007 E280 CDI estate with 68k.
MB say:
Urban 26.7
Extra urban 47.9
combined 37.2
Ha!
Urban I'm lucky if I get 20
Extra Urban I have seen 32
Combined I don't even want to think about it...
I drive very smoothly always looking ahead with minimal use of brakes(!).
What are fellow owners getting?
Is there something wrong with my car? (Regularly serviced, no faults on Star)
Can I sue MB for misrepresentation????

Hmm you sound a little low but not drastically so.

Those figures sound about right for a V6 saloon you've quoted. On an estate they are a good 3 to 4mpg lower.

I'd give it a good Italian MOT, service and make enquires then but its not massively out.

I've had my 320cdi for 11 months and am averaging 33.6 mpg over 19,000 miles.

The car is about 2 mpg thirstier than my 2001 s210 IL6 320cdi which is disappointing.

Even if you re-set the computer when the car is fully warmed up and set the cruise to 70 mph on the motorway it won't do much better than 40 mpg.

Hills and urban traffic will quickly destroy any good figure you build up on a journey. I have never done a journey over 38 mpg.

I have checked the computer figures by brimming the tank and they are accurate.

Unfortunately mpg achieved by newer models started to go backwards after the demise of the 611, 612 and 613 CDi engines. Part of the price we pay for cleaner air. The best I've achieved with the 613 engine is 46mpg confirmed brim to brim.

My E280 CDI has averaged 33mpg (not taken from the computer, actual brim to brim calculations) over 15,000 miles of mixed running.

jp that would be as I would expect if you have a DPF.
My average this financial year is less than 35mpg but was closer to 38 before I started doing regular cold start journies over to the sailing club with very steep climbs each way. At least the engine does it with ease.
No DPF on mine.

My 2009 CLS320 with 101,000 miles (yes, 6 figures) did a 300 mile round trip today from Edinburgh (area) to Aberdeen and it averaged 45.1 mpg.

Going up hit the Edinburgh bypass standstill and got to -7'C, but drove like a vicar the rest of the way (60mph). Coming home averaged 70mph with no traffic congestion.

Specification E280 CDI no DPF 245/265 Tyres at rear

Year 2007
Engine Size 2987 cc
Fuel Type Diesel
Transmission A7

Fuel Consumption Imperial (miles per gallon)
Urban 25.70 MPG
Extra-Urban 44.10 MPG
Combined 34.90 MPG

Your car with the sport wheels.

Now the official test is 2.5 miles doing 12mph.
You live in Wimbledon, do you maintain that average?
If you are sitting in traffic, at lights, junctions etc. a lot then it will be worse than the 25mpg official figure, as you will be doing 0mpg a lot of the time.

The extra urban figure is with a fully warm engine, ambient temperatures of 20-30ºc and an average speed of 39mph over 4.5 miles.
Not the 80mph most of us sit at.

Get your car up to temperature, sit on a quiet road and do 39mph for 4.5 miles and see what it says it is doing.

The main thing to check if you still think you have a problem is the temperature, should be sitting at close to 90ºc once warm, and will take around 25 minutes or 15 miles to get there this time of year.
If it doesn't get there and sits at 80ºc or lower change it, it is telling the car that it is cold and will be over fuelling to compensate.

Thanks for all your replies especially gizze - very informative.
OK I am now convinced there's nothing wrong with the car and will try what gizze says.
It's not right that they should be able to advertise consumption based on unrealistic conditions: I, like many others I would imagine, went for the car because I was seduced by the published mpg (among other things!).
Has anyone ever returned a new car to a dealer because it didn't fit the description???

Dreaming of a CL55k - one day maybe....
Try a manual DPF regeneration.

You need to get on a motorway.

Get the car over 3000 rpm and hold it there for 15 minutes, do not let it fall below 3000 rpm - you will have to manually shift to 3rd to get those revs and choose a quiet time as you don't want to have to brake.

That should help.

My 320CDi has seen highs of 46-47 on long cruising and lows in the 20's crawling in traffic or v short journeys - average over the past 15k miles is 38. My mixed run into work gets around 40mpg in the summer, less in winter when it's cold. Yours sounds a little low to me, but as has been mentioned before a lot depends on whether you get the engine up to temp, up to cruising speed at any points, heavy traffic etc etc - all affects the real world mpg. Personally I always take manufacturer MPG figures with a pinch of salt as they're always achieved under ideal or unrealistic conditions that we'll never see ;-)

Cheers,
Mark

The most I ever got from my 320 was 46, that was on a 45-50 mile journey and steady 60-65 mph.
My average mpg was mid to high 30's , overall I don't think that was too bad considering the size of the car, did go like s*** off a shovel though :)

We assume that this is a diesel then and not a 320 but a 320CDi

52mpg was my best. Actually 70mpg was but that was downhill on the overrun.
