811 Giant van overheats on tickover.

Hi all.
Friend has a giant 811 van formerly used as a BBC Outside Broadcast van.

On tickover it overheats. My guess is thermostat is stuck shut.
Also, the revs do not come up over 2K, coughs and splutters and a touch of white smoke.

Any ideas apart from "junk it"!!

Star does not seem to cover this vehicle either.

possible injector fault (overfuelling causing the overheat) or possible head gasket failure (by the fact it splutters and smokes)

other checks id make would be the fan (viscous coupling if fitted) operation, radiator for 'cold spots' indicating blockages, and thermostat operation.

If high mileage, do injectors spray pattern test and replace. Does it cool down at higher revs?

Thanks Guys.

Cant get it to run over 2K, just splutters and stalls, so cant take it out onto the road for a good long run.

It seems to have happened after a short period of not running, about two weeks.
Very strange!

Going to see my mate later this week and have a better look at it, but thanks for the directions so far.
