Alas - Primary Cooling Fan Issue - Help!

Hi Guys and Gals.

Driving home Thursday I heard a small knock from the engine bay and when I checked a blade from the primary cooling fan had come off cutting a water pipe.

I have been lucky, I think. No radiator damage etc and a new fan is fitted now however.......

1. Im sure on a 300te24 (1991) the fan coupling is viscous, is this correct? This would, if im not being stupid allow the fan to turn when the engine is cold and off by hand?

2. There appears to be a little play in the pully for the fan. Its enough for me to see it when fitting the new blades. Is there a tollerance for this play or should it be tight and without any variance?

I wonder if the loss of the blade has cause damage to the bearings for this pully and if there is an issue where the coupling is frozen causing the fan to rotate at full RPM with the engine.

All ideas, advise and guidance here greatly appreciated.

If you can feel play in the fan pulley there must be play in the water pump spindle bearing where I would have expected the pump to be leaking coolant if there was any appreciable play, or something is not bolted up properly. There appears to be 2 types ,one with a separate bearing carrier and the other where the fan and coupling is bolted directly to the pump spindle , it will depend which type you have whether you need a new pump or a replacement bearing.

Theres no water loss so im going to take a chance and go with the coupling alone for now.
