to answer your Q's- auto trans fluid dipstick should be at the back of the engine compartment, left side if you're standing infront of the car atached to the very back of the engine- (that's where it is on the 124- think it's the same on the 190.) It'll have a red or black plastic top which clicks open to withdraw the dipstick. Fluid should be checked warm, after driving 10 miles or so, and the car must be parked on level ground. Use a clean, lint-free cloth. the fluid should be hot to touch, and up to the top line on the dipstick or near- not over.
healthy fluid should be light red in colour, not brown. It should also smell 'clean'- not burnt.
I think the change interval is something like every 30k, though I've heard some techs say not to change it on a high-mileage car.

hope this helps...

My tuppenny tip - it's a very long dipstick, and also the fluid, if clean, will be very pale coloured and quite difficult to see on the 'stick, so have a couple of practice 'dips' so you get to know what you're looking for. CLEANLINESS is essential!
A couple of points Chaz left out - The engine must be running and the gear lever in 'P' when checking.
