There was a guy on Talk sport the other night discussing Swindon councils plans to remove static speed cameras. A caller phoned in to say, 'if you change lanes in an average speed camera zone it cant track you'.
Can any one confirm this?

try it and let us know, I wouldnt think that system can be flawed that easily, surely not.

Mind you I tend to come off the A14 before I reach the next camera so dont really worry about my speed, when the A14 is busy there is more stop start becuase people slow for the cameras.

If you change lanes you are more likely to get flashed according to one of the police program I saw when speed cameras came into operation a number of years ago.

Average speed camera's do not flash, and you have to wait the few days for the ticket to arrive

I read an article which said you can change lanes and it can't work out your average speed because each camera monitors one lane only. That said, they are bringing out a new one that cross references with the other cameras and checks all lanes.

I too believe that this is the case now Helen

Yes, I can confirm. Speaking with a colleague recently, who was involved with the software & hardware development of SPECS systems for the UK, the software tracking system is not 'intelligent' enough to track an individual vehicle changing lanes. Nor can it register a vehicle whose number plate is 'hidden' within the rear 'shadow' of an HGV or large van.

His advice is to change lane every time having passed under a SPECS camera. Which probaly explains the temporary 'Stay In Lane' signs.

THIS ADVICE IN NO WAY ENCOURAGES IRRESPONSIBLE DRIVING. But good to know if you accidently stray over the limit.

I know someone who tried it in a hire car a few months ago - no ticket was ever recieved :D

I've often wondered why there is only ever two cameras covering three lanes?

Probably because the field of view is suficient and 2 cameras are cheaper than 3 :)

The cameras operate similarly to any ANPR systems. They log the reg plate with time stamp. The next camera logs the plate etc, etc, It doesn't track the plate through the zone, just logs it in and out and the system calculates the ave speed.

These will become more prevelant in the years to come, replacing the Gatso. You wont be able to speed, slow for the camera and then speed up again. Your whole journey will be timed!!!

Hence when the blanket 50mph limit was in force on the Thelwall Viaduct ( M6 ) a few years back, most of the HGV's were dodging from lane to lane far above the 50 limit. It was a 4 lane section so they had 3 lanes to choose from.

I was over in Lincolnshire last week and there are loads of really nice biking roads with 50 limits and average speed cameras. Makes driving very boring IMHO.
