You'll probably get a lot of different answers to this. Me personally it's Autoglym. But everyone will have their own favourite. :)

They are wildly differing products, your question is like 'what car is best for a family'.

May I suggest a search on the type of protection, time and financial investment you want from this exercise, then I and several others can advise better

What I'm hoping for is a type of product I can apply myself that will provide some 2/3 years protection with relatively easy maintenance on a daily driven car that will live outside in the rural Worcestershire area.

I have used graphene based coating on silver cars for a number of years now.Forgotten the name but full details
are in Detailing World forum in the Coating Section. Easy to apply, lasts for circa 3 years on garaged cars & a year
approximately if left outside.

Great additional info, thank you

As a non-specilaist detailer, for home application requiring no special equipment and dead easy to do, this is the obvious product for you - its a Nano Polymer, not Ceramic as thats going to take a lot of care to get a 2-3 year finish and this will last 3 years - I used it on my Range Rover so can personally vouch for that. Its low cost, wipe on/buff off - all by hand, and really works brilliantly. Even on that it only took 2 hours or so to apply both co IMG_4362.JPG IMG_4363.JPG IMG_4364.JPG ats.
