The light has started coming on when you hit the brakes. It also came on from time to time when driving over cats eyes last night (left front wheel effected it)

have had all the wheels off this morning, no pad problems, the wheels all spin (relatively) freely and there's no leakage of fluid... any ideas anyone?

The pads need replacing when you brake and the lamp comes on.

But the pads are huge - I keep a car log and I only replaced them 10k ago. I checked them this morning - they're not even half worn...

Could the fuid be low, or a faulty sensor.

If you suspect a faulty pad sensor, double check the wire is not grounding somewhere, you could als disconnet it to see if the lamp still comes on.

One other thought - Isn't the brake pad light is an orange one?
Do you mean the red one and if so, is this the same light that is used to warn that the handbrake is on? From memory, this warns only for low fluid or handbrake so, if the fluid is ok, I'd check the microswitch for the handbrake and that the brake lever is fully releasing, cable ok etc.
We had a posting recently where the switch was maladjusted and would bring the light on randomly. Bumps and braking would induce a similar effect.

JB's memory is better than mine, not a good day for me, as someone has stolen one of my new autoranging meters.

It used to be very good years ago with the onset of disc brakes. Once the pads were beyond there wear limit, your brake pedal went down to the floor.

I bought a MK10 for next to nothing almost new with a fault that the brake pedal sunk to the floor and no one could fix. You could pump it up, but it soon went down again. I bought some new pads and it was fine. I kept it for three years and then sold it on for a good poffit.

The first Mini cooper S had disc brakes with no servo, that was a pig to stop.

heheheh

my triumph 1300 had no servo and was equally a git...

The discs were warped due to a seized slider - freed up now and new discs & pads. braking well again and no light (or wobbles)
just the electrics, windows and stereo to fix now
oh, and the carb & the bodywork.

Never had that problem with the pedal going to the floor because the pads are worn, might have been a fault in the master cylinder with the rubbers sticking and when you pushed the piston back it released the rubbers.
