hi steve-o. what does the smell smell like? is it just 'heat' - hot plastic, or an electical burning smell?

has the car been parked up, or the heater not used for a while?

I had a similar thing in one of the old cars I have owned. In my case it was engine oil seeping past the rocker cover gasket and getting onto the exhaust manifold (a hot bit). It wasn't enough to start smoking but you could smell it as it burnt off. Could this be happening in your car?

oil is leaking slightly from the oil cap on the engine, maybe thats the problem? Probably is the problem as its only started smelling since I have noiced bits of oil comming from the cap

Its not a plastic or electric smell, more rubbery.

Thanks for the help

Get a new oil cap as it seeps out more and more once it starts leaking.

I agree, had the same thing a few month ago, the filler cap rubber had perished, where it had gotton hot/cold. topped it up with oil, and she decided spit it all back out down the motorway (not a pretty site) smoke everywhere, looked like summit out of james bond film ;)

maybe thats why bond baddies always have oldish mercs for the chase scenes - they're easy to get smoking...
