I have a 1999 C230.... and the key will not turn now for some reason.

- I have replaced the batteries in the key.
- Seat moves, radio works.
- Windows won't go up/down.
- Good battery in car

What could this problem be.... any suggestions or answers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ken

Nobody has an answer....

Doesn't seem like anybody on this forum has a clue to my problem.

Hi,

Possibly the EIS (ignition switch module). Until you get some more advice, pls have a search around the forum in the mean time.

Not even to Key 1.
When I push a button on the key, the red light flashes once.

We were driving it fine. Then stopped, turned off car, removed key, then realized that a windows was down, inserted key back in, and haven't been able to turn the key any since then.

Thanks

Have you tried the spare key? Does the ignition buzz like it should when you insert the key?

It's either the transponder in the key or the EIS switch. Bad news is that both are expensive. EIS is £400 (guessing a bit here) and the keys are £150. If you haven't got a spare, you could order one (as you should have one really) but it will take a week or so and it could still be the EIS. If it is the EIS, I believe it will need to be coded to the car which is a Merc specialist or dealer job. I think you may need to bite the bullett and get a dealer (or indie) to come and get it. It's not a simple DIY fix I'm afraid.

Jberks did give you the perfect answer and the prices quoted are correct, not good news, but nothing one can do about it, you do though have a 75% chance on it being the key.
