Interesting. While I can drive safely and very good with regards observation, I consider my

I haven't checked, but recently chatting to a big VAG fan, I believe the Golf has gotten very pricey, for what it is.
Golf always has been overpriced for what they are ever since the MK3 model was launched

Precisely, it's all about image :) Perhaps the reason why some of us drive MB's
Your probably right on that one AJD as I cant figure out why somebody will pay extra for a prestige badge if the car behind it doesn't live up to what that badge once stood for

If you are considering a VW, just buy a Skoda. Basically the same car, different badge.
If you have money to waste, buy the same car with an Audi badge.

Skoda have fewer designed to die parts - but the styling at the front is bad enough to make you run away screaming - note (dampers, brakes and other unseen parts are different on Skoda - cheaper as can be the suspension bushes and geometry)

oddly Seat which is even closer to a VW, and not ugly AND are substantially more reliable than any of them...

so with much of the items that impact reliability - like engine sensors, wiring looms and ECUs etc. that should be identical but aren't.... that comes back why all brands have a special UK Mkt parts bin that usually has a lot more / and or all of the nasty ones that die earlier than the other Mkts !!!

Yes I thought that when I was dragged into the local MB showroom some of the cars in there looked badge-engineered :)
