Different Springs & Dampers

Hi All

I've moved this query from another thread as its really a different question to the one originally posed - Retro fit self levelling??

My car is an E320 Saloon. All the examples I've driven have had a fair few miles on them and so were not at their taughtest. The main reason I bought this one was that it was by far the lowest mileage example within the allocated budget. However, the dampers are well past their best and I have no real notion of how the car behaves on “Unworn” standard items. Before replacing them, I want to consider the options.

I’m not looking for the most comfortable ride but not rock solid like my Porsche. My own view is that, given the nature of the beast, the spring rates are probably about right although I wouldn't rule out stiffer or progressive rate springing depending on cost. There's no doubt in my mind that tighter, say 10% or so (or even adjustable) damping would be advantageous with the standard sprigs ; so I was wondering if any one had any experience or ideas re upgrades??

I have the Avantgarde version C class estate with the optional Sports pack. I believe Avantgarde versions have lowered suspension anyway but mine has the 17" wheels with lower profile tyres plus Sports brakes. The suspension is described as "stiffened" a certainly feels it! To the point where it can be a little tiring on long journeys. But this is all outweighed by the great handling.
One has to avoid the ruts and potholes though!
This option is all MB original so it might be an option for you to replace your tired shocks and springs with the E class Avantgarde set-up. A good starting point anyway.

Check out garethc200k thread on changing shocks, may not be so straight forward

I have a 98 E300TD that I changed the rear springs and shocks on plus front shocks. I used Boge heavey duty springs and sacks shocks. Cost £300.80. It made a hudge differance when towing my caravan. Now only drops 1" when the caravan is hock up.
