I just posted the below in another thread but thought it was relevant here

If you want to ensure you have every insurance quote you can possibly get - go to the comparison sites - they are all slightly different

GoCompare, Moneysupermarket, TescoCompare, Confused.com

and

Aviva and Direct Line directly because they are not on them

If you do all of the above, you have covered all your bases

Other ways to bring down prices - I have put my wife on insurance policy's before, even with a provisional driving licence(believe it or not) brought the policy on an Audi A4 2.4 down by over £100

Also, before my wife got her provisional, I put my mother on car insurance as well as me and that brought the price down too.

A warning also, the companies that appear to be cheapest on comparison sites, usually manage that by cutting the policy to the bare minimum.

For example, fully comp applies to driving in the UK only, if you go abroad you may only be insured for 3rd party, or charged an extra £88 to amend the policy to fully comp for 14 days in France. That was my experience, I would have been cheaper buying a dearer policy to start with.

...and some make more money by selling your data, especially following a claim. Think about it - it costs an insurance company between £40 and £60 to have their quote appear on the comparison site. They know they won't make any money on the policy until year 2 but then at renewal the price comparison site sends their customer an email encouraging them to use the site again to find a different deal, working against the company that paid them £40-£60 last year.

Brokers don't tend to sell your data and they do try to encourage loyalty by offering good service and a real person you can talk to on the phone. It seems many people aren't bothered though.

Soapbox - down from.
