Engine oil 'minimum level' warning message

This is the conundrum: on my '98 W210 E300 TD estate (which I am still running at 299,000 miles) about every other day I get the 'engine oil at mimimum level' warning message, usually on the motorway, usually on a slight upward incline. But the engine oil is showing maximum level on the dipstick. Why am I getting this message and what other fault(s) should I be looking for? If it's of any relevance we are about 1800 miles away from the next service interval at present.

I suspect its more likely to be a faulty sensor.
I wondered about this. How do I check for a faulty sensor?

The remedy, the coding of instrument cluster has to be read out and changed from engine 112 to 113 with the HHT test set.

The sensor is a an occasional failure. I too had grief with one from new. just a case of replace and monitor. Dont ask me where it is because when mine was done the guy in the main dealr could not tell me where it was located!!
