Hi

I am looking for a w124 series merc and need to decide between the 200 or 230e manual or auto. Does anyone have specs on fuel consumtion for the 200e manual and auto and the 230 e manual and auto. I have been told that the 230 has got a better fuel consumption than the 200? Is this true?

Mine has averaged 34 m.p.g. over the past 5,000 miles, with around 50/50 town/urban use.
Don't know what the book says, but I'm happy with that. It is well known the 2 ltr. is a little underpowered for such a heavy car, so the the 230 may well return a better mileage.

200 vs 230

I don't think there will be much difference in fuel consumption between a 200E and a 230E. I wouldn't buy a 200 (carburettor) car

However I'd recommend an E220 over any of them. It's a more modern engine and I think it will be more economical than the earlier engines

Thanks for your replies. 34mpg sound very impressive for average driving for such a big car! Just the more reason to find one as soon as possible!

The difference in BHP is only about 15.

I had an 88 230E auto.
Superb car, and still been driven by the person I sold it to.

But the 300 is far better in every way, and usually comes with a better spec. and 30mpg, no problem.

The 4 pots are a bit short on grunt for such a heavy car, except the later 16vs.
But the sixes compare well regarding mpg.

My 1992 124 230E auto does 22 around town and 30 on a run. The last tank that was about 50/50 town and crusing did 27.5. Most of mine is mainly short town work, so it is probably 'as bad as it gets'. In winter with sole town work it can go down to 21. I find the 230 easy for my needs. I have heard that it is prefered to the 200. I have never felt it stressed.

Do try the 300E before you decide on a 230E, particularly if you enjoy a bit of foot down driving and overtaking. If you drive in this manner you will find the performance of the 6 cylinder engine much better suited to the weight of the car (Power/weight ratio and all that) and the difference in economy marginal. The 4 speed automatic gearbox in either model is a peach but the manual is a bit agricultural to say the least!

I've had a 230E 1992 for getting on one year and am averaging 34 m.p.g. mostly dual carriageway driving but some town driving. Pretty good for a big car provided you look after it with regular maintenance, oil change every 3-5000 miles etc. etc. Paid £1800 with 63000 miles on it - good economical transport.

i would second the above post. if you can, get the later (16V) 2.2l motor. it's much more responsive than the earlier (8V) series, has significantly more power (150bhp vs 134bhp), and returns better fuel economy.

I have owned manual W124 230 E it returned 30-40 mpg depending on use. Auto W124 230 E managed 26-32 mpg.
W124 260 E did 24 mpg no matter how you drove it !
W124 300 TE 4 matic Auto 17-30 mpg.

I own a 89 300e Auto to which is a great smooth drive, good performance for such a heavy car but i tend to have a heavy right foot (only in the dry!) and in plain English will get around 97 miles on £20.
