Going to France, is Ethanol E85 safe to use?

Following on a from the 190 forums thread linked above, can anyone shed light on the higher ethanol content petrol being safe to use in a 1990 200TE Mercedes I will be doing many miles in later in the year when in France?

Pre 1995 Porsches we're told not to use E10 petrol (10% Ethanol) as it eats the lining of the fuel lines clogging filters and injectors. I'd guess that E85 is 15% ethanol! I found last year that high RON is not necessarily a guide to low ethanol as, at one filling station in Northern Spain, I found a 99RON pump showing E10 - which is the norm for 95RON fuel, whereas 99RON is E5.

E85 is 85% ethanol, the other 15% will be petrol.

As with biodiesel added to diesel ie B10 , is 10% added biodiesel.

I'd never before heard of E85, let alone it being 85% ethanol! Don't think I'd even think about using it in an older car, think of all the fuel ine linings, seals etc that it will touch that were never designed for ethanol use as part ethanol fuels did not exist at the time the car was built!
